it depends on the souce you read from as to if it's good or bad, there are alot of place with misinfo on them on it, it's not a high mold oil like safflower or sunflower and has the right EFA's in it for what our kids need, so we use it alot around here

I used to use it too...it is bad for everyone. Get the Nourishing Traditions Cookbook...very helpful and informative, much more than a cookbook...should be in every mom's autism arsenal of info......Di

We were just talking about this when we did our

Whole Foods gf/cf tour today. Think of canola oil as the motor oil of

the group. Really gross and not good for the body.

Olive oil and coconut oils are great. Safflower and Sunflower for high

heat cooking. Grapeseed is another that families use. Alternating a few

is best and not sticking to just one.

We use Safflower oil for my son’s cooking. We found it was the best after trying all the others.

There is significant research evidence to suggest most oils are not

good for cooking with. The problem is the heating of the oil. Most

oils when heated become carcinogenic. And example is extra virgin

olive oil, which is good for you if you put in on cold on a salad. But

if you heat it, it becomes damaging to your health. Coconut oil is one

of the few oils that does not change chemical composition or become

carinogenic when heated. Canola oil is real bad.

Why do we cook with oils? We cook with oils because someone realized

they could make money from others by creating a cooking oil industry.

Prior to recent times, people used to roast an animal and collect the

fat and use this for cooking. This didn't make anyone money, so their

was a big push to sell cooking oils. There is a significant

correlation between the rise of cancer and the rise of the cooking oil

industry.

There are also a few studies looking at regions that have only used

coconut oil and fat. Guess what? They seem a lot healthier than the

rest of us.

You'll find a lot of studies to tell you that whatever oil your using

is great. The problem is, they are conducted by the people that want

your money. You need to find the independent studies.

Cheers

I am trying to get on board with the coconut oil, but my family does

not like it so far....so for those in the same boat I use bone broth

for just about everything and it is OH MY GOODNESS delish...learned

this technique from Nourishing Traditions Cookbook...of course she

puts a dollop of butter on everything once cooked bc without the

autism injuries it is actually good for you..., do you do any

butter? The family does not like ghee, Matt can't have it, and I do

not like the taste of raw butter...food is so challenging and

everyone says something different about what is good and what is

not..maddening. What do you eat and what works for your kid in your

house? Do you have a gut kid? Thanks. Di

Hi Di,

Yeah food is a tough one. Lets face it... its all hard.

We use coconut oil where we can, but your right, its not good with

everything.

We also do what my ancestors did before the rise of the cooking oil

industry. We roast an animal, collect the fat, store it and then use

it for cooking. However it only gets used once, after the first time

it is thrown away. It is never re-used. But that still works out

cheaper than paying for oils. Natasha McBride has a lot to

say about it.

What is interesting, is that after you have not consumed anything that

has been cooked with oil for a while, you become very sensitive to the

taste, and you start to pick up on it if you eat out anywhere, and the

taste feels like its very foreign to the food you are eating. Eating

something cooked in the "usual" cooking oils starts to taste wrong.

We don't use any butter, apart from casein issues, we have dairy

allergies to deal with. But if you didn't have casein issues and dairy

allergies I would guess that raw butter would be much better than using

something like Canola. Generally the less processing the better.

We do a lot of juicing, and we try and maximise greens and other

vegetables. Berries and some other SCD items a good. Between

Nourishing Traditions and GAPS and BED and SCD we try and find the

widest range of food and try and rotate it as much as possible to

reverse allergies and avoid more allergies developing from a limited

diet.

The amount of time that has to go into food planning, preparation,

purchasing etc is painful. But my daughters getting better and better

each day, so its worth the effort.

Cheers

-You can buy it in bulk from Wellness Family Farms...very $ at whole

foods, but I would try before you buy as it is def a taste

adjustment...it can be slipped into smoothies though...very high

antifungal properties hence the no cancer in Kerala reputation (

Kerala, S India) DI-- In

Yes you can cook anything with coconut oil. Some people just don't

like the taste. Just make sure you don't have any allergies to coconut.

I know what you mean...,matt is gaining daily. We are currently off

valtrex and all other drugs, but plan to do the second phase of

Pfeiffer stuff...we hope there approach works as it is an expensive

intervention. Did you read McBride's book? THe BED/SCD etc - none

are a total match for our guy...Matt cannot handle any dairy except

fermented goat and in tiny amounts. What recipes and foods have your

found the most healing...we have tried all meats in this house, but

only lamb and duck are eaten in Matt's case. Right now he is on

those crazy egg drinks...we shall see. He seems to love them and

they seem to help...any ideas on the food front are always welcome

here. Have you tried the clay baths for detox? Di
