Guest guest
I worked at a place called " Sprouts " located in South Fallsberg New York... in the early 70's .... We had about 30 old fashioned bath tubs that we used to make a lot of alfalfa sprouts....we packaged them and we brought them to the Hunts Point Market for distribution to all of New York City.... I can tell you that there is no way that we would have produced any sprouts that might make people sick... what happens to the sprouts once we brought them to the distributors is another story....the problem would begin somewhere between the distributor, the retail place or the buffet where they may sit out all day.... but it would have been almost impossible for any reasonable sprout grower to send out bad sprouts. Sprouts are commercially produced under very clean conditions, they are usually produced alone .... and inside...not like a cantalope that might fall on the ground and get mixed in with some animal feces... that won't happen with sprouts.... Â Â And besides this news report is most likely a lie designed to get your mind off the real problem...corporate food. Subject: News To: sproutpeople Date: Monday, June 6, 2011, 10:20 AM Â Hi all, Here is a news item from this morning. ew BERLIN (AP) -- German officials say initial tests show that sprouts from an organic farm in the country's north are not the cause of the E. coli outbreak. Lower-Saxony state's agriculture ministry said Monday that 23 of 40 samples from the sprout farm suspected of being behind the outbreak have tested negative for the relevant bacteria. It said further tests are pending. The E. coli outbreak in Germany has killed at least 22 people and sickened more than 2,300 across Europe, leaving customers uneasy about eating raw vegetables. Guest guest
Hi n (and everybody). This reminds me of when, two or so years ago, I had just begun to sprout and I was at an anniversary party and I had a Gardens Alive catalogue on me and they had the little square sprouter and I was showing people. Someone comes up to me and says: " Oh, it's too bad that you sprout because you know there is an alfalfa e-coli outbreak, blah blah blah, and the he said " you know broccoli sprouts don't really fight cancer " . THANK GOD I KNEW MY INFORMATION. I looked him dead in the eye and said " Before you go spouting off and telling people your opinions, get your opinions right. (THIS GUY NEVER WENT ON ANY COMPUTER). I then told him about the doctor on youtube who gave a complete presentation on the benfits of broccoli sprouts and how they fight cancer. (Imagine me standing up at an anniversary party with 8 other people sitting at the table listening to me). I said " now let's talk about those alfalfa sprouts " . I DO NOT BUY PACKAGED SPROUTS OR PACKAGED PRODUCE. Those are LOADED with bacteria because they have been in a processing plant, they have been cross contaminated, they have been handled, hence the availability of e-coli to get into those packages " " I GROW MY SPROUTS IN MY KITCHEN. No one touches them " . DO YOU NOW GET IT??? The guy just shrugged and said " Well, believe whatever you want, I know what I read " . You cannot educate people who refuse to open their minds to any NEW thing. So I don't try anymore. UNLESS SOMEONE ATTACKS MY SPROUTS. Guest guest
Correct me if I am wrong Melody, but having lived in your area, when people are blunt (like the woman you set straight) it is not considered rude, but is culturally acceptable. Speaking of cultural differences, the first time I experienced bartering Haitian style, I was appalled at the shouting and cursing, but became accustomed to it as a culturally accepted gambit. I have friends from Japan who experience great shame when corrected directly - one must be very discreet. Vive les différences. Ezekiel pasta tonight made with sprouted grains. Is it ever dense! Guest guest
Nah, she wasn't being rude, She was just being funny. She did this while she passed me by driving in her car. She was stopped at a light. I just explained how my poor sprouts got a bad rap and she understood. NOW THE GUY AT THE ANNIVERSARY PARTY who told me " too bad your sprouts aren't doing you any good " . now HE was being rude. lol Melody

Guest guest
When people (who don't eat correctly, weight 100 lbs, are anorexic and only eat white stuff) this is the guy who made the comment, and he heard me excitedly talking about my sprouting and showing the Gardens Alive catalogue to a person who wanted to know why I wouldn't eat the meat dish that I was served at the anniversary dinner, and all I said was " well, I try and eat vegetarian as much as I can, I sprout " and the person said to me " what do you mean you sprout, what's that " ??? And I began to explain, and THAT'S WHEN HE WALKED OVER TO ME and said " oh too bad they proved that there is no benefits to eating broccoli sprouts " . Remember, this guy does not own a computer. So I asked him " Mind if I ask you where you got this information? " And he said " OH I go to the library all the time " I said " do you know how OLD the library books are " He just looked at me. I never raised my voice, I never have confrontations. Especially over eating choices. It's like trying to convert a catholic into being a mormon. A person will change if they have a REASON to change, and they are MOTIVATED to change. There is no on/off switch that goes " Poof, you will not eat healthy " It all comes from experience and a desire for emotional and nutritional growth. If one is not desired to be healthier, all the talk in the world is going to bore them to death and fall on deaf ears. So I just go about my way and take my little tub of sprouts with me each morning and eat my salads during the day and well, I feel that I am doing my body GOOD!!! lol Melody > > >
Guest guest
Melody You are talking about teaching by example. Wich is the most effective way to encourage healthier habits. If I tell someone I am a Buddhist psychologist, vegan animal rights activist, they are interested for all of 5 minutes due to the curiosity factor. Then they go back to whatever they were doing before maybe with a mild interest and some change. If they are over my house and nothing is said, they ask questions about what I do,what am I growing, how do you grow sprouts, how do you juice, where did I get my great companion animals from ( all rescues), and why dont I eat meat or cheese. They see we are happy and become interested. n Dr. Rollings NJ Licensed Psychologist #4686 www.DrnRollings.com Sent from my iPad > When people (who don't eat correctly, weight 100 lbs, are anorexic and only eat white stuff) this is the guy who made the comment, and he heard me excitedly talking about my sprouting and showing the Gardens Alive catalogue to a person who wanted to know why I wouldn't eat the meat dish that I was served at the anniversary dinner, and all I said was " well, I try and eat vegetarian as much as I can, I sprout " and the person said to me " what do you mean you sprout, what's that " ??? > > And I began to explain, and THAT'S WHEN HE WALKED OVER TO ME and said " oh too bad they proved that there is no benefits to eating broccoli sprouts " . > > Remember, this guy does not own a computer. Guest guest
n, your being a vegan animal rights activist makes me like you even more. Some of our coworkers (Bill and I worked for the same company, CSC) belittled our veganism. One day I brought in a large very chocolate cheesecake. After the guy who made fun of us most has polished off 3 pieces,.I informed him it was made from tofu, completely vegan. That shut him up. Guest guest
n: Absolutely everyone who has seen the way I grow my sprouts, they go ooh and aaah, for about 5 minutes and then they go " hey whatever floats your boat " . Not one person has changed the way they eat or what they eat. They are too used to convenience. They ALL say " I could NEVER do what you do, it's just too hard " Since when is not dying an early death TOO HARD?? Melody
