Laurie, and other parents with ADD-Autism,

I've heard this same story or similar many times, and I feel for you.

I will try to answer your questions as best I can. I have over 30

years of Orthomolecular training, and have invented an new and

1. Diagnosing ADD to Autism. This is literally impossible. We can

not " separate " accurately where ADD/ADHD stops and Autism begins.

Every Autistic child has allergies which cause the ADD/ADHD portion.

There is no good way to tell how the INDIVIDUAL brain has been

affected by whatever combination of factors caused this. There are no

tests that can give anything but the very broadest of answers. We

cannot measure accurately inside any brain. On my website are free

2. ADD/ADHD has been around for a long time, but Autism is fairly

recent in numbers large enough to be of concern to the medical

community. There are still few pediatricians trained to deal with it,

and even those are trained exclusively in drugs not nutrition.

Remember that no MD's are trained in Nutrition and Digestion, let

alone actual brain damage. They are trained to use drugs only. It is

the " exceptional " MD who learns these Orthomolecular therapies.

3. There are NO drugs that really solve autism or even really help

ADD/ADHD. What they basically do is " drug " those children so they are

more " controllable " . Remember that MD's do NOT learn about basic

nutrition or digestion in Med Schools, only much about drugs, and thus

many MD's are " educationally handicapped " (a quote from Abram Hoffer

the President of the Orthomolecular Society). There are " some " " self

learners " in the MD profession, but very few.

4. In the opinion of most researchers and workers in this field,

every child with autism also has the ADD/ADHD syndrome. caused mostly

by allergies. It is impossible to know where ADD stops and autism

begins. It is one continuum. Each autistic person is an INDIVIDUAL,

with different genetic factors, and differing brains with differing

responses to different stimuli. We can accurately measure mechanical

body functions - heart, liver, thyroid, sex organs, etc. but we have

no accurate testing for the brain.

5. The " best " therapy until recently for the ADD/ADHD portion has

been EEG biofeedback (now called Neurofeedback 'NFB'). By raising the

SMR brain wave, and lowering the Theta brain wave, the allergy stress

slowly disappears, and concentration or " attention " increases.

However, NFB is very expensive even for just ADD/ADHD, costing around

$5-6000. For Autism it is much much more, and few NFB clinics will

even take autistic children because of the problems involved -

attaching sensors, concentrating on the video, etc.
