Guest guest
, A 504 Plan is for people with disabilities. It falls under " civil rights " (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and is under the Office of Civil Rights). So this can apply to workplaces too. You can have the school set up a 504 Plan with accommodations and modifications regarding the classroom, schoolwork, etc., to meet the needs of your child. It - and this is a quote - helps " level the playing field " to give a student with disabilities the same opportunities as the " typical/average " student. So, like with 's OCD making him take LOTS more time to do homework whereas a typical child might take 20 or 30 minutes and 2 hours, it helps accommodate 's disability by allowing him shortened assignments or more time to turn in work or less writing.... And since writing was hard for him, he could get copies of teacher notes, etc., when he got more to the age where the teacher would write and the students take notes from the board or overhead, etc. Like one teacher would just give him the list of definitions each week, whereas others had to look up the words for homework at night; this was less writing for . With us, we didn't want any special education services (speech, OT, aide, equipment....) so a 504 Plan worked just to modify and accommodate 's weak areas due to his disability. I could have pushed for an IEP I think but haven't seen the need yet. I will say that I also didn't choose an IEP as I didn't want " stressed " and I was concerned they might put in some goals/outcomes for to work on. Like " will accomplish more of his work at school and take less home " and maybe push him a little too hard (for my tastes) as to meeting this goal. Which for some kids might be fine, but I felt didn't need to be pushed. So that's another reason I've been OK with a 504 Plan. I didn't want to disagree with the school about any " goals " they might want to work on; a 504 Plan doesn't have any goals. OK, it's early in the a.m., don't know how much sense the above made!
