Hi Anant

Is it possible these are not alfalfa seeds? They sound like chia or arrugula.

I would suggest getting a new batch of organic seed from sproutpeople or one of

the other vendors and try the new seed.

overnight and put them in the sprouter but only a handful of seeds sprout. I

noticed that after soaking (even for half an hour) the seeds develop a gooey

layer which completely cuts it off from air and the layer stays for many days.

Think this is the reason why they don't sprout. I'm not sure if you folks have

experienced something like this before. Pointers on how I can do this right will

be of great help.

Hello Anant,

I was thinking the same thing as n. Perhaps the seed you have is one of the

mucilaginous ones (such as chia). That would explain the " gooey " layer. On the

sproutpeople site, they say that mucilaginous seeds should be grown as

micro-greens.

I've been sprouting alfalfa for about a week now, (the seeds came as a

bonus  in my Sprout Garden box), and so far they are the easiest and fastest

growing of the green sprouts that I've tried. Do see if you can get a small

quantity and give it another try. I'm sure you will love the results - light,

airy, easily de-hulled, crisp, and sweet. Doesn't get much better than that!

I wish you success!

Peggy,

Your description of the alfalfa sprouts makes me want to run to the kitchen and

get some soaking.

Yesterday I had to decide between alfalfa or clover to mix with my broccoli

seeds.

I picked clover, so next time it will be alfalfa. Last time it was radish.

Alfalfa is so Crisp and sweet!

Well, I love the clover, too. Why not mix both the clover and the alfalfa with

your broccoli? Best of all possible worlds?? (I suppose if you add the

fenugreek...lol)

We're big fans of the alfalfa and now I need to get some more. The last of the

sample is growing right now.

Here is something I've wondered about: In my Guide to EasySprout, it talks about

One-Rinse Baby Alfalfa. I've never seen this. It says that baby alfalfa is

sweeter and has a much longer refrigerated shelf life than that sprouted to a

longer stage with multiple rinses. Hmm...just occurred to me that this probably

means to harvest the alfalfa at an earlier stage, not a different seed as I had

thought. If you want to try the " baby alfalfa " , it says: " OMIT alfalfa insert.

Put warm water in sprouter, then add 1/2 C seeds. Soak 8 hours, drain and refill

with fresh warm water. Thoroughly dran and loosen seeds. Sprout until 1/2 "

(about 24 hours) and rinse. "  [and harvest, I guess].

It also says for growing long alfalfa and salad types, you can " use one-rinse

method, then remove half the sprouts and rinse 1-2 times per day. Or, use the

alfalfa insert and 1/4 C seed. After soaking, drain well and rinse at 8-12 hour

intergals, to desired stage. "

Hope this is helpful to someone.

Great! Let us know how you like them. We ate the last of the alfalfa tonight and

my seed order is on the way. Can't wait! Have to make do with broccoli, Mother's

Mix, and Russian Mix until the order gets here. Not such a bad thing, I'm

thinking!

I'm glad your new seeds are sprouting for you.
