Guest guest
We have 2 kids with autism/ one with aspergers and one with PDD-NOS and ASD. We applied for both kids but one got SSI and one did not. Our PDD/NOS/ASD daughter got SSI. I think it is really important to let them know what she/he cannot do, and make sure to talk about school and life skills. At the time she got SSI ( she still gets it) she was about 4, not potty trained yet, had severe language delays/speech problems, cognitive delays and was in an enclosed classroom. make sure they talk a lot about your child's struggles with every day life and school is the best thing to do. I started a list of things I noticed about my child to share with them, liek when she plays outside she does not do anything excpet focus on dirt, wont play with others, wont look in eye, afraid of loud sounds, and her reactions to things in life like a car driving by the house while she is outside driving her to a screaming fit. Or not being able to shop or eat out. That kind of thing. Also remember if you do get a denial - you can appeal and reapply too. A lot of people do not get in the first time. Subject: SSITo: "Autism Yahoo Group " <autism-georgia >Date: Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 7:06 PM Has anybody explored the option of applying for ssi. We have a almost 3 year old that will be going to early learning center. Jr has been diosgnas with autism. Also medicaid/medicare we are going to look into it any hints. Guest guest
We had SSI for our twins who were micro preemies. Gave SSI all our financial information, etc. They came back 18 months later for a review after they had been receiving benefits, then determined that we never qualified and sent us a bill for all the payments they made. This Friday I have a meeting for a " waiver of repayment " since we can't pay it back. The whole time our twins received payments they never had the information correct no matter what I did (still had one as being in the hospital and never updated his records) so I guess I should be grateful that the bill isn't twice as big. Be very careful about making sure that they have the correct information.. what disqualified us was that they decided to count our 11 year old car as $5400 cash in the bank, and they did this retroactively even though the car was reported in our initial application. I have been told that SSI is based on financial need, not soley on medical need which we met. If you have more than $3000 in combined resources for a couple (they valued the car as $5400) you do not qualify. This has been very stressful as I do not understand what happened. Financially we are just above the poverty line with a family of 6, and 2 of the children are disabled and were diagnosed with autism after we lost medicaid. Each time I try to point out that errors have been made on their end they emphatically deny it. I learned the hard way that they can make mistakes, then come back and change their findings and now I have to go in and prove that we are broke (not hard, we are) when in fact they really need the benefits and the medicaid. Guest guest
Not all children have income limits that qualify for SSI. Ask Social Security administration. Even if you have a handicaped chid. Subject: SSITo: autism-georgia Date: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 12:16 PM I'm confused!!! My son is 10 and has Aspergers, also has SSI and with that comes medicade.. He was on Peachcare which is basically a medicade program. You can always get that if you fall within the income brackett. I dont know what your child "has" disability wise but.... ??? ann For all parents, we all have Hopes for our children, but for some parents we have High Hopes !! http://groups. yahoo.com/ group/HS_ HighHopesspecial needTweensGwinne ttWalton/ ?yguid=364861626 Come join our group! Guest guest
SSI is a check that comes in the mail. Peachcare is a health insurance policy and does not accept you if you qualify for SSI and medicaid. Subject: SSITo: autism-georgia Date: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 12:16 PM I'm confused!!! Guest guest
Correct, but if you qualify for SSI you qualify for medicade is what I am saying. My son WAS on Peachcare until he started getting SSI and they switched him to straight medicade. Guest guest
Was it easy or difficult of get on Peachcare in general. How long did it take for them to accept the application and start the insurance? How long ago did you apply. Thanks or your assistance. Also, I can't qualify for medicaid. I wish that I could because it gives you more mobility to live anywhere in the US and get health insurance with little difficulty. Guest guest
If you apply while he is still 17 Social Security is going to base the decision on his disability and family income If he is over 18 it will be based on his disability and his income. He cannot have over $2000 in his name.
Guest guest
Sherri, We have just begun this process with my son, who will be 18 next week. The process for the application was fairly simple, I was able to do mine online and on the phone with the coordinator out of the Winder office. She sent some information through the mail and I signed and sent them back. Now we wait. The medical records are being requested and the review board will determine if he is eligible. Then, the other part of the process starts. If anyone has any other words of advice, I'd ike to hear them as well. I hear that many people are denied and it requires an appeal, so don't be alarmed if this happens. We have received notification that his Beckett is ending Jan 31, but I checked with our DFCS office and with proof that we have applied for SSI, he can remain until he is approved or until his 19th birthday. Champions for Children covers some medical for children who are denied KB up to 22 years old. Hope this is helpful. We have already started the process of applying for SSI, as we have never qualified before. We have an appointment 1/25. Is there anyone who has already gone through adult SSI process who could give some insights?
