My patient is a freelancer. She interviewed me for 9 hours for a

national magazine and they transcribed and edited it down to

this eight page spread in the November issue.

Enjoy!

Pamela,

Very inspirational!! Along similar lines I came across this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/15/health/15chen.html?emc=eta1>

I've been developing a project which I hope will address these issues. Short description below:

The Four Elements is the first planned community for a broad spectrum of population that carries the intention of creating a culture/environment of health. It will be located in an urban or suburban setting and consists of residential and retail space anchored by a non profit/for profit integrative healthcare center. Design and technology will be based on green, sustainable, healing space ideas. Retail space will be leased to businesses committed to the principles of the community and will consist of tenants such as a farmers market, healthy foods style restaurants and other related approaches. The non profit/for profit integrative healthcare center will provide annual healthcare credits to the residents of the community and will be based on the financial performance of the Center and the participation of each resident. The healthcare credits will be used as an incentive for residents to sustain healthy lifestyles. Retail and healthcare facilities will be open to the public and will serve to promote the greater good of the surrounding area. The Four Elements will address a solution to the healthcare crisis and be adaptable to different locations.

Arizona State University is very interested in the idea and is very generous in contributing it's resources to the development of the concept. They have expressed an interest in locating it in downtown Tempe, AZ. The Tempe city planners have also voiced their support. That being said, we haven't finalized a location.

Interesting concept. A couple of ideas. Try to entice a doctor working

in the health care facility to live in the community (?give free home in the

community as long as he/she works there). Encourage the doc to do home visits

to the people who live in the community. Having a doc at a health care facility

is nice and fills a need. Having a doc as an integral part of the plan of the

community (as a neighbor, a small-business person, a community activist, etc) recreates

what is healthy for us physicians and increases the “sense of home”

for everyone else in the community. Also, have you thought of “health

credits” to the doctors/providers in a way where they can find an

alternative form of payment other than insurance. That would complete the

package. Probably a lot to ask for, but one can dream.

Thanks y'all. . . the piece they ran online is less than 50% of the

actual article. If ya get a chance check out the full version.

And yes! I have already had emails/calls from folks around

the country who told me they were crying after reading it.

One woman drove all the way up from San Francisco to

meet me the day after she read it. She told me she would

move to Eugene and do whatever she could to support my

patients and my practice.

Woweeee!!

How is she going to support your patients? Is she offering to work for you?

Here's what she said she wants to do to support me/patients:

Dear Dr. Wible:

I just read the interview in The Sun, and I am moved to write to you

about the possibiity of meeting with you to talk about partnering.

I live in Pacific Grove, CA but am headed to Ashland right now to

visit my son & I would gladly drive the 2.5 hours to Eugene to

meet with you. My immediate thought was: I want her to be my

doctor followed by I want to partner with her. The partnership

that came to mind was helping your patients create their own

vegetable gardens OR co-creating a community garden.

I would move to Eugene, find a semi-rural living situation

so that I could share a garden, chickens, beekeeping, etc. &

also teach at the community college there in time. Initially,

I would just want to be your patient & help your other patients

create organically home-grown vegetable gardens.

I hope you're intrigued.

She's not requesting funding. Just wants to volunteer to help me

& my patients. We brainstormed some pretty amazing ideas on

Sunday as she sat in my office for over 2 hours with her partner and

dtr.

More later. . .

This sounds like something that could happen in Portland. I went to a

talk last nite by the 'bicycling ambassador'

of Copenhagen---where 37% of transportation is by bikes not in lycra.

Portland is working toward this kind of

thing. We could be a leader in new models of health care too. The Four

Elements model would go over big here!
