Guest guest
Jo Diniz August 18, 2010 Paso Support Meeting Dr. K said... " if the biles digest protein, and your body is made up of Protein...why doesn't it digest itself? " Guess what...it does! It is called Pancreatitis. Which Pancreatitis basically means inflammation of the pancreas. What is happening during this inflammation is the pancreatic biles are digesting the pancreas. ouch! The causes can be Alcohol and gallstones or UNKNOWN...most causes are unknown. From there. But another reason not to be a " drinker " as that is something we can control. From there he went on to the function of the pancreas parts and about Transplants and such. It was asked " how do you know if you have pancreatitis " The answer " oh you will know because you will be sick and HURT " . (for a good overview of the pancreas you can go to http://www.emedicinehealth.com/pancreatitis/article_em.htm ) There was also a short discussion on as a DSer would we be canadates to be a " living " kidney or pancreas donor. Dr. K said being as far out as I was and healthy there was no RULES against it...but he doubted any doctor would do it...he said he wouldn't. The different types of Diabeties I & II were discussed. Type I is from the body not making insulin. (and surgery does nothing to correct this type) Type II...the body makes enough insulin but is resistant in USING it. This type of Diabeties the DS has a very high rate of curing. We had a guest who was Looking into the surgeries and didn't know the difference between them. So most of the meeting was on the different types of surgery. Dr. K actually wrote on the board that the Gastric Bypass " sucks " Then said something along the line of " is there any doubt how I feel about the Gastric Bypass? But then I wouldn't trust anyone who wears a bowtie! " ...lol Dr. K talked about the importance of doing the yearly follow ups and going to meetings. He also said that he isn't recommending the same things he used to because new information is always coming out. So keeping in touch is important. He also talked briefly on recently going thru the Center Of Excellence review. He said they come in and randomly pull charts. They are looking for things like patient followup...and if the patients are BETTER or WORSE off after surgery. If a patient has lost weight, no longer has high blood pressure, diabeties and high cholestrol...but they are now Vitamin Deficient...medically they are still " better " off as they have less conditions and are treatable. That's all I'm remembering for now. Hugs Jo
