Guest guest
Mel, different sprouts will react differently to being put in the refrigerator, just as different plants outside react differently to a cold snap. The only thing you can do is give it a try. If the fridge trick doesn't work, tryt putting your sprouts close to the floor. Heat rises. Placing the Sproutgarden INSIDE refrigerator on HOT days!!! So can I put my Sproutgarden (at least overnight), in the fridge? It's a good question, no?? lol Melody
Guest guest
EW: I guess this will be a " try it and see what happens experiment " . This morning, I put a new batch to soak. Tonight they will go into trays. I have no problem overnight when they are first sprouting. On the 3rd day, that's when I'll notice any irregularities. So what I'm going to do is put them (evenly), no overcrowding, in my round green trays tonight. Thoroughly rinsed. Tomorrow morning once I rinse and drain once again, I'll see how the temp is in my kitchen. I have a bottom shelf on my Sprouting shelf. I'll take off whatever I have on that shelf and put my stackable Sprout Garden on my shelf. Of course, I'LL MAKE A VIDEO " This is a " let's wait and see kind of experiment " Then, if I see I'm not getting the results I like, I'll put them in the fridge. I'll make a video of that TOO!!! lol You gotta love technology!! Guest guest
Hi Melody, The temp in your refrigerator is (should be) slightly above freezing - mid 30's. This is definitely too cold for warm season crops such as sunflower. In the garden, one is advised to plant these sorts of plants when night time temps are in the 50's. I would guess they will brown and be a bit shocky in the morning. Have you thought of putting a cool pack (such as you might use in a food cooler) on top of the trays at night to help keep the temps down? You could refreeze the pack during the day and use at night. Guest guest
How do I say " I love you " Never thought of using my COLD KEEPERS to place around the sprouts on my shelf. I have 10 of these in my freezer. I got them for free when my husband was undergoing IVIG and they would send the medicine packed in cold keepers (that's what I calle them, COLD KEEPERS). Never thought of using them for my sprout trays. These things keep cold for 12 hours. Going to do it when it gets warmer. This morning it was about 70, now it's dipped. So I'm good until it gets warm again. You and your great ideas!!!! SAVED ME!!! lol Thanks much Melody > > Hi Melody, > The temp in your refrigerator is (should be) slightly above freezing - mid 30's. Guest guest
I find sprouting chick peas in the refrigerator takes away the funny taste and are not likely to rot. It takes longer but it is worth it. > > Hi all. > > I don't think this has ever been addressed (and if it can, I apologize), but this morning I awoke to some wilted smelly sprouts in 2 of my trays. I know the smell, because this happened to me when I initially started sprouting in my mason jars. > > So I switched to the sproutgarden and have had no problems, till this morning. > > Now it could be that I had too many seeds, I didn' rinse and drain properly but WHO KNOWS? because I'm diligent about rinsing and draining. > > > It has gotten very hot and humid here in Brooklyn and I have no air conditioning. > > So I got the brilliant thought. (And I have the room) > > As I rinse and drain and I make sure all the water is gone, why can't I put my stackable trays (maybe 4 of them) INSIDE my fridge on the shelf. Plenty of room for them. I don't have lots of stuff in my fridge, just the stuff that I use. > > Now is this feasible. They would not be subject to humidity. They would be in a much cooler environment, etc. I remember last year (when I had an air conditioner in my bedroom) that when I went to bed at night (and the room was freezing) I would take the trays and put them on the bureau and return them to the kitchen in the morning. > > I am not replacing my air conditioner. > > So can I put my Sproutgarden (at least overnight), in the fridge? > > It's a good question, no?? > > lol > > Melody >
Guest guest
Hi there. I have come up with what I think is a GREAT way to keep sprouts cool as they sprout in my kitchen. Why can't I take my trays and place them side by side (2 sets each) so that would make 4 trays total. Why can't I put them INSIDE one of those coolers that people bring to the beach. I know two kinds of coolers. One is called an igloo and it's costly. The other one is a few bucks and it's some kind of big Styrophome cooler that people bring to the beach. I figure I could put in the two sets of trays and set some of my cold keepers all around the trays, close the lid and leave and 12 hours later, I do the rinse and drain. What do you all think? I think on a really hot and humid day the cooler would do the trick. Melody
Guest guest
Pretty cool Melody! Glad you like the idea - I know I have lots of random " chilly packs " in my freezer. You just don't feel right throwing them out, and now we have a new use for them! Guest guest
Well, here's a thought, my trays have been covered and stacked. Where's the air circulation in that??? I have had 6 trays with covers all stacked on each other. How is this different than putting them in a BIG cooler with those cold keeper things. I could keep the top of the cooler off. AND I WAS SO EXCITED. I really thought I had something there. lol lol Melody > > > Hi there. > > > > I have come up with what I think is a GREAT way to keep sprouts cool as they sprout in my kitchen. > > > > Why can't I take my trays and place them side by side (2 sets each) so that would make 4 trays total. Guest guest
n, when you say " when they start growing', do you mean with the covers still on them?? Guest guest
Hi marion. When they start growing out of my covers and I can no longer fit the covers over them, that's when I put them on my shelves for greening. I use the swing down lamp, and leave them on the shelves for a few hours. When I'm ready to do this (I have a batch sprouting now and it's getting warm in my kitchen, so when they are ready to be uncovered, I'll put some cold keepers around them as they green. Should cool them off. What would I do without you people?? I would have NO sprouts, that's what I would do!!! lol Melody > > > > > > > > > > > Hi there. > > > > > > > > > > > > I have come up with what I think is a GREAT way to keep sprouts cool as they sprout in my kitchen. > > > > > > > > > > > > Why can't I take my trays and place them side by side (2 sets each) so that would make 4 trays total. Guest guest
n: I just came home from breakfast. Along the way I stopped in Walgreens and CVS. They all have SUMMER COOLERS on sale. On Sale???? They are $30 bucks. These are the BIG coolers, that I could fit 4 trays with covers in very easily. I'm looking for the cheaper styrofoam coolers that cost under five bucks. I asked the lady and she said " oh we don't have them in yet. I have plenty of other places to go and check. I'm determined to keep my sprouts COOL!!!! lol Melody > > > Hi there. > > > > I have come up with what I think is a GREAT way to keep sprouts cool as they sprout in my kitchen. > > > > Why can't I take my trays and place them side by side (2 sets each) so that would make 4 trays total. Guest guest
Everything is overkill for my purposes!!!!I mean, $30 for a cooler. Must be some big beach party going on. Oh, I know what they are also used for. I went to a friend's block party once and they had all the ice and all the beer and soda in one of these big things. It comes on 4 wheels with a big handle that you can pull. Very much overkill. lol Melody > > > > > > > Hi there. > > > > > > > > I have come up with what I think is a GREAT way to keep sprouts cool as they sprout in my kitchen. > > > > > > > > Why can't I take my trays and place them side by side (2 sets each) so that would make 4 trays total. Guest guest
Did you see the movie " The Craiglist Killer " I'm not going anywhere near that site. For a couple of bucks, I'll go to my local place and they will get it eventually. Taking a walk later to Biwise Pharmacy, they always have these things there during the summer. They might have gotten it in already. Even the local Niney nine cents stores carry them. I mean, they carry FURNITURE for heavens sake. You can walk into one of those ninety nine cents stores, and they have 10 rooms of stuff, it's like going into a mall. One day I was walking about 12 blocks from my home, and found this little store. Well, it looked like a little store from the front. I walked in and I said out loud " OMG " " . What kind of store is this. They had rooms and rooms of everything under the sun, patio furniture, house furniture, clothes, and of course everything else was ninety nine cents. Guest guest
Hi. Want to know another reason why I don't trust people that much in my area? A few weeks ago my husband was riding on the bus with his cane. He can barely walk but he gets around. He needed to get off the bus and this man would not let him by. Since his bus stop was fast approaching my husband again asked the guy to move, the guy wouldn't budge and my husband just moved past him. The guy decked my husband to the floor, eyeglasses go flying and he started pummeling my husband. Of course my husband defended himself with his cane. The guy ran off the bus. Unfortunately and because it was his time to get off the bus, my husband followed the guy in where he worked. The police were called and my husband demanded that the guy be held responsible. After hearing what went down, the cop turned to my husband and said: " If I arrest HIM, I have to arrest YOU because you had the cane and that's considered a weapon, so you'd be charged with a felony. It didn't matter that my husband was all bruised and bleeding. Of course no charges were pressed because everyone would have had to go before a judge and who knew how the judge would rule. The point is that if you are accosted on a bus, and you have a cane, and you defend yourself, you will be charged with a felony and have to plead your case in court. It can be decided in your favor or not in your favor. I checked with other cops and yes, that's the law. I told my husband. " Next time some guy jumps you and you have your cane, hand him the cane, and defend yourself. That way HE HAS THE CANE!!! this really happened by the way.
