This is one area that is so tough! My son would get himself into such convulsions that he would throw up his entire meal, defeating the purpose of the brushing! It took until age 5-6 for him to really realize (after the dentist put him in the hospital and extracted 3 baby teeth that were beyond help) that if he did not brush, that same procedure would have to be done again and he was not pleased as he came out not feeling very chipper. Now, we make a big deal of picking out toothpaste, and toothbrush, and the special cup we rinse with, and overlook the fact he rinses 15 times and spits it everywhere, sometimes in the sink (ha) and then act like we are blinded by how "shiny" his teeth are :) I hope that something spurs the want to brush, but that is one area that is so different for each child with autism! I am just

blessed that an older sister helped spur this on as he loves to imitate his sister (not in the dressing department mind you lol) . . . If it makes you feel any better, we still sometimes cut our son's nails in his sleep . . . he hates it, especially toes! He is going to be 7 in December :) Blessings, Subject: Teeth brushingTo: "Autism Yahoo Group " <autism-georgia >Date: Tuesday, September 9, 2008, 9:50 PM

We have a almost 3 yrs old and are trying to find a way to get his teeth brushed. When we do it he throws a fit and cries uncontrollable.

We cut his hair and his nails when he is sleeping. But we can't do this when sleeping.

Does anybody else have the same issue ?

My son really likes the powered tooth brushes. I let him brush first and I brush after. Also I tried a number of tooth pastes before I found one he liked.

You could also try giving your son a toothbrush to carry around and chew on so that he gets used to the feel of the bristles -- then you can show him (you brush your teeth while he has his toothbrush) so that he can mirror your actions. It may take a while, but he will probably catch on.

Also, you could get an electric toothbrush with a rotating head -- let him feel it on his fingers while it is on and eventually get it to his front teeth -- progress from there to the back teeth.

Our son had (and still does with his toenails) severe sensory issues, cutting nails, hair and brushing teeth when he was younger. We were persistant and keep exposing him to it 2 or 3 times each day -- like 1 finger nail clipped, or messing with his hair and especially around his ears so that he would get used to the feeling, etc. He is now totally fine with haircuts, toothbrushing and fingernail clipping -- we had to resort to just filing his toe nails, can't get those suckers clipped for anything!

Good luck!

Sorry -- forgot to add this to my first "toothbrushing" post -- but your son also may not like the taste or feel of the toothpaste. Let him try it with a dry brush -- it is not the tooth paste, but more it is the mechanical action of the bristles cleaning the teeth that is important. But it does help to cut down on decay if you can get him to rinse with ACT fluoride - but you need to make sure he doesn't swallow it. We started our son on VERY, VERY diluted ACT til he learned to rinse and spit...then progressed with that as well.

My son will still barely tolerate tooth brushing (he is 10). We take him for a professional cleaning at the dentist every 3 months instead of every 6 months in an effort to keep his teeth healthy.

my son has only been the dentist twice. . . the first time, when he was 5, he went ballistic and went screaming down the hallway . . . now mind you, our dentist is a good ole southern boy, about 65, very sweet, and whenever I call his office now, I remind them of who is and they say "oh, we know, the boy who went screaming down the hall" . . . . but the last time we went after the surgery, he let the doctor do everything and he even got a balloon, and realized if he is good, he gets rewarded!

oh, and before he became mobile, the doctor could see he had cavities because 's mouth was wide open SCREAMING!

Would toothettes help with brushing? It is a stick with a sponge on the tip. They are used for cleaning teeth off.

My son (22 months)hated to have his teeth brushed too. We found a video that included children brushing their teeth. We read book about it. My husband and I also went way out of our way to show him how we brush our teeth. My son loves stickers so after he brushed his teeth he got a sticker. We were able to phase out the stickers.HTH,
