Guest guest
I was at a small country fayre a couple of weeks ago and a lady was selling tongue scrapers - as I was purchasing a couple of them for my daughter, I mentioned that she always brushed her tongue with her toothbrush in the mornings - the lady then told me she should not do that because it 'could' seriously impair her taste buds. Just passing along what I have been told in the hope that it will save someone from making losing their sense of taste. My husband has severe problems with sense of smell and he will tell you, you just don't appreciate what you have until it is gome. nne > nne, Are you sure? Guest guest
I have always been told NOT to brush the tongue over a long period of time. It is OK once in a while but one should use a tongue scraper. Evidently the brush damages the individual little " thingies " (not the technical description) :-) on the tongue. One can use a large spoon turned upside down as a scraper although the scrapers only cost about $3.00. Guest guest
I thought I'd note that I've been brushing my tongue daily for at least the past 40 years, quite vigorously in fact, and I have an exceptionally keen sense of taste. Guest guest
Some people smoke 2 packs per day for 50 years and never get cancer but it doesn't make sense to smoke. I don't say smoking causes cancer but certainly increases the odds. Why brush the tongue if warnings abound? I sometimes brush when I don't have my scraper but I find the scraper to be much more pleasant. Guest guest
There can always be the exception to the rule, either way. It could be that it is a rare thing that it does happen or of course, that it doesn't - I just would not be willing to risk it now that I have the information. I pray that you never lose that keen sense of taste. nne > I thought I'd note that I've been brushing my tongue daily for at least > the past 40 years, quite vigorously in fact, and I have an exceptionally > keen sense of taste. >
Guest guest
Succinctly put and so true. nne > Some people smoke 2 packs per day for 50 years and never get cancer but it > doesn't make sense to smoke. Guest guest
Hmmm, I was hoping someone would have info showing tongue brushing warnings originated long before tongue scrapers originated. It all sounds like marketing hype to me, even though I'm sure none of you " tongue scrapers " own stock in scraping companies. This is the first time I've heard any warnings...and I am alert to such things. Which is why I asked if there's any testing been done to confirm that brushing contributes to loss of taste sensation rather than some other variable--like fluoride in toothpaste. Guest guest
Let's get something clear: taste is sweet, sour, acid, salt, picante, bitter. Everything else is smell! So, brushing the tongue will not affect what most people call the sense of taste, which is actually smell. jim Sharon wrote: >I thought I'd note that I've been brushing my tongue daily for at least >the past 40 years, quite vigorously in fact, and I have an exceptionally >keen sense of taste. > >Sharon > -- Before you deny yourself something you want in your heart, ask yourself, " If not me, Who?
