Wandering is a leading safety concern for the estimated five million Americans with Alzheimer's disease and those with related illnesses. It is estimated that as many as 60 percent of people with Alzheimer's will wander at some time, including from their homes and care facilities. Project Lifesaver outfits individuals with wristband transmitters that, using FM radio frequencies and 30-day batteries, emit a continuous signal 24 hours a day. Project Lifesaver also trains public safety and law enforcement teams in search and rescue techniques and equips them with mobile tracking devices that can receive the wristband signal and locate the missing from a mile away on the ground to five miles by air. Project Lifesaver has rescued nearly 900 wanderers in the past five years, with an average response time of less than 20 minutes versus other search operations that can last for days. Currently, 250 police and sheriff departments in 35 states and Canada participate in the program.
