Melody,

I typically do not fry with Olive oil so don't buy the refined type, but I would

think you should be able to get in various grocery stores alongside the extra

virgin oils and other lesser refined oils, or possibly in a specialty market.

However, I wouldn't think it would be that hard to find.

Here is an interesting article about cooking with olive oil as well as other

oils. . .

Thanks, Tina - I'll wear it proudly, LOL! (or maybe, I should say, post it

in my 'gold star' book proudly - not quite sure what they do with gold stars

these days!)

Absolutely correct! Gold star goes to Thea!

use olive oil for high-heat cooking, you need to use refined olive oil, not

the cold pressed virgin or extra virgin olive oil as the latter will begin

to smoke, signifying a breakdown of the oil and even possibly then rending

it with carcinogenic properties. This is something I recently learned at a

healthy eating class. So, I guess it's not to say that you shouldn't fry

with olive oil, but it needs to be with the more refined version.

Interesting topic and certainly one I'm open to hearing more about.

Thea:

I usually use the Red Carotino oil, but because I have a bottle of extra virgin

coconut oil, I'm going to start using that. In the oil aisle in the

supermarket, does refined Olive Oil SAY refined olive oil?

Thanks much

I'm not sure what the olive oil bottle should say but what it should *not* say

is extra virgin or cold pressed or extra extra virgin as none of these are

refined. So conversely, yes, I would certainly think it would indicate that it

is refined on the label.

Thea:

I have seen bottles of oil (in my local supermarket) that said " POMACE OIL " . I

had never heard of this kind of oil.

So I went online earlier (after reading all these postings), and I googled

various types of oils and one of the pieces of information was that Pomace Oil

is not fit for human consumption.

How the heck can this be?

The best oil for frying is peanut oil, it has a great flavor. My ex and best

friend is Italian and he only uses olive oil for salad dressings, not cooking

unless he was mixing it into a sauce. He did fry using olive oil when nothing

else was in the house, but that was for light frying of eggplant. Typically you

don't want to fry with olive oil as it will burn at high temps.

I buy kukui and castor oil from mountainrose

http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/bulkoil/bulkoil.html

they have some good information on oil quality/nutritional value maybe you'll

find it useful. -Toni
