Guest guest
HI, I was wondering if it is sufficient enough to put up stop signs on the inside of his classroom door, have signs on the classroom door to keep door shut, and for other staff to be aware that my son is a runner, plus having a one on one (even though it is not in writing) enough to protect a school against due process to get him into another school that is more aware of a child with autsim. Do I still have a chance to fight since they will not teach him to be safe? This is discrimination. Other children are taught safety goals according to the illinois goals, but he is in a self contained class. does this mean they are exempt? There are strategies to teach him but my school outright refuses. Their defense is that my son does not understand and probably never will? HE CAN BE TAUGHT, and I am not in denial. The only goal he has for running is to walk independatly throughout the school building. I go to observe and even in his classroom they are holding his arm to walk from station to station. Is this enough or do I have a legitamate fight?. Since the little things they have put in place is this all they have to do? There is no documentation of him escaping only what they have told me and they have denied things before when push comes to shove. I need help my lawyer has set up a iep meeting and I recieved notice today. I am panicking. I hate those meetings. thanks Kathy - In AutismBehaviorProblems , " Dora Lattish " wrote: > > Don't back down from this issue Diane - it is a serious safety issue.and you > don't have to let them dictate how it will be handled. Guest guest
Gosh, you sound just like me and that is exactly how is. And nobody really understands this till they see him do that. And, I am so afraid he is going to do that in the new school setting since it is not the same as Hope wall, which is all special needs and a special school and he would not be able to get to far. I worry about this so much. I dont know what else to do. I dont agree with moving him to a new school even if it is self contained and for special needs kids only. Stacie This is exactly what I tell my school. I am more aware then everyone else and I am always asking even in my house, where my son is. I have told people about my son running but until it happens no one takes me that serious. This is why he has a aide foloowing him around because he has gotten out of the school building many times. I dont want to worry you, but you are his mom you know more than anyone. Dont push aside your mother instinct. kathy> > > > Subject: Re: self contained classrooms> > To: AutismBehaviorProblems > > Date: Friday, May 9, 2008, 5:12 AM> >> >> >> >> >> > I know and I am so frusterated. Guest guest
I know what you are saying Diane. I am worried about this with my son too. He is 5 as well and a runner. One day, we have all the doors at home locked and you need a key to get them open. Well, I turned my back for a second and found the key, got in the kitchen and out the door in a seconds time and when we looked outside, he was in the street, a city bus was stopped 2 feet from him and a truck was coming from the other way. Talk about terrifying. also runs so fast as you can see. And the scariest thing about this is, that when my daughter who was more dressed then I was went out to get him out of the street, he had no fear or anything in his eyes at all. It was so scary. Stacie B Aurora IL My son is 5 and getting ready to start kindergarten in a different building than he was in for spec ed preschool. I am tearing my hair out about it because he is a runner and they aren't prepared for it (yet) at all. The building's main door just outside the special ed classroom has those push bars that anyone can easily operate and opens right to a street area. The other day when I visited I saw an older autistic boy alone in the hall and shortly after a para came running frantically out of the special ed class calling his name. Of all things to see on one of my few visits to the place so far! I am freaking out. The autism specialist for the area said the principal is working on a plan. But I don't have high expectations. If they've had that 2nd grader in the school since kindergarten and still can't manage to keep him contained, they probably won't do well enough to contain my much more active little guy. The kid I saw has some physical limitations, so he is slower. Mine will be a mile away before they notice. I wish I could home school him. All I do is worry and think how if they lose him he may get hit by a car or drown in some creek. I also feel if he slips out of the class they'll never let me know. They could lose him every other day, even have to call 911 for help, and I don't know if I'd ever find out about it as long as he was found before school let out. -Diane Re: self contained classrooms> > To: AutismBehaviorProbl emsyahoogroups (DOT) com> > Date: Friday, May 9, 2008, 5:12 AM> >> >> >> >> >> > I know and I am so frusterated. Guest guest
Hi, I am new to this site, but not new to behavior and autism:) I apology if these questions have been asked but: a) does your child have objectives in his IEP for running behavior? what about a behavior intervention plan? c) functional analysis? Guest guest
yep, the $50 dollar word for running is "elopement" and it is a common challenge. I believe that all children can learn and many (most), when utilizing effective, research-based strategies, will make amazing progress. Certainly, walking independently in school and keeping hands to oneself are great objectives. However, I think that running (elopement) should also be addressed. It is a scary and often unpredicatable occurrence. One strategy, that can easily be used at school and home, is to practice "stop" and "go"with picture cues. This can be fun and ensures that your child actually understands these concepts- for example: the game red light, green light; or running in place- "go, go, go, stop feet"; etc... Self-contained classrooms are designed to implement individualized education plans. The goal is to provide a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. Guest guest
for elopement a "stop" training sometimes will work. Take the child for a walk and at random times say, "stop" and stop walking. If they keep walking stand still until they stop. Keep doing it. Make it like a "do as I do " game. Then when the elopment happens the child may remember the "stop" prompt and want to play the game instead of running away.
