Guest guest
Hi , My daughter was taking paxil cr since February. We just finished weaning off on Friday after 13 1/2 weeks. She wanted to get off of it due to weight gain. This is a very big concern for a 12 year girl. I did see some results with her rituals on the paxil but not enough to compensate for the weight gain. She started on 12.5 with a gradual increase to 37.5. The doctor wanted to increase to 50 for maximum results but she wanted off the med. Although it helped with some rituals, we still have a big problem with anger and irritability. I continue to wonder if these SSRI's are not for my daughter. We also tried prozac (9 weeks) , but she had an increase in anxiety on it. We are taking her to the Children's Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety on Thursday at the University of Penn. If they can help the 2 hour ride weekly will be worth it. I think I am also going to get an opinion for a mood disorder before we try any more meds. Her anger and irritability are really the main issue right now, and I can't shake this gut feeling that it is not all related to ocd/anxiety. Didn't you have the same concerns with your daughter? What did you find out that convinced you her anger was anxiety related? Sometimes we have to go with our motherly instincts, but I hope I'm wrong. Her therapist says she could have a mood disorder but his opinion is if she does what will you do different. Of course he doesn't know about meds because it would make a big difference. Anyway that is a whole different issue. I feel very bad for my daugher buy we may have to switch therapists again or add another one on. Good luck with meds - that's always a long road. Let me know what you found out about anger. Thanks, Lori
Guest guest
Paxil has a reputation for being the WORST for weight gain. I was on it and gained 30 lbs in about 6 months. I'm 36 years old and have never, ever had a weight problem...even after 3 kids. On Paxil, I was literally hungry all the time. :-( --Tina
Guest guest
Hi , for awhile Kel's doc prescribed a small dose of Paxil to counter the activating effect of her Zoloft, and this did tone her down, so from our experience I would say Paxil is more sedating. She also had less OCD when taking both meds than when just taking Zoloft. Paxil does have the reputation of being bad about fostering weight gain, but this is not true in every child, and my child did not gain weight while taking Paxil. Good luck with this, Kathy R. in Indiana ----- Original Message ----- From: pupabedda2001 My daughter responded well to Zoloft but because she put on weight and had difficulty falling asleep (less evident with smaller doses), I was going to try a low dose of Paxil this time, since her condition is mild enough that we can take our time deciding. (If her condition was severe, I'd jump to Zoloft, weight or no weight.) Does anyone out there use Paxil for Anxiety/OCD with decent results? Is it sedating or activating?
