Sounds EXACTLY like my son (diagnosed with OCD and Tourette's last year).

He is not a hand washer either. But, he exhibits all of the other symptoms

you describe...and more. Mostly bad thoughts and feelings...but he also

" squeaks " .

Hi Zizzi,

Your 10 year old daughter sounds just like my ten year old son.

He does not have many obvious rituals - but suffers mainly from the

voice/thought inside of his head telling him to do things that he does not want

to do - and doesn't do.

Disorganized....yikes..... it also is what keeps him from the higher grades.

And yes, when frustrated with homework etc. the paper gets crunched up into a

ball and tossed with frustrating crys. I dread homework time. If he loses

something of value (like a yugio card) he panics and starts crying and there is

no peace in the house until he finds it.

These children also seem to be very sensitive. loves his family and even

talks about his great grandparents who are in an old age home and how much he

loves them. He takes great pride in making home made sentimental cards for the

family - but when he is frustrated look out - his sensitivity turns to CRANKY

and the whole house feels it and the mood can change for all of us in an

instant.

It is amazing how many common demonators there are with our OCD children. Her

symptoms sound pretty familiar. I wouldn't doubt it if has ADD as well.

Is she on any meds (SSRI's) at all ?

you discuss are not there.

My daughter is not a frequent hand washer in fact I have to keep on

her about washing her hands at all.

she does however stress over any task she is trying to achieve, like

drawing her pictures.

She gets so frustrated if it is'nt just perfect to the point of

scribbling it out and wadding it up, while having a tantrum about it.

She always talks about having a bad day before the day even happens.

she has allot of fears.

she has allot of thaughts that worry her.

One time while riding in the back seat of the car with me driving and

the windows down she suddenly and bluntly requested that I roll up

the window near her " FAST " .

When I asked why she said, in frustration " I keep thinking of

throwing my toy out the window and I am going to do it.

another time she had told me that the voice in her mind was telling

her someting (and I cant recall what it was) I asked her if she was

hearing voices and she said that " It is actually just a thaught but

it seems like a voice " .

Although intelligent,My daughter is very disorganized and is

constantly forgetting to turn in her homework, homework that should

have only taken about 30 minutes to do but ended up taking 1 hour and

30 minutes to do with the chaos and all...

I remind her constantly that the only thing keeping her from good

grades was turning in her homework assignments. She claims that she

really wants to remember to turn them in and she wants to get good

grades but she " just cant help it " , she " just can't stop forgetting " .

I believe her.

Does this sound farmilliar to anyone?

Thanks for reading and any response.

Hi, Zizzi. Yes, a lot of what you wrote sounds familiar to me. I have two

daughters with OCD and one of them is a hand washer and the other one isn't.

OCD isn't just about compulsive cleanliness--in fact, it's been my experience

that it is far from being a " tidy " disorder! My youngest daughter, , has

" voices " too and she describes them as " loud thoughts. " She really suffered

from bad thoughts but is doing much better now. She has been in treatment for

over two years now and with medication and therapy, she is showing a lot of

progress. She is very disorganized still but we are working on that! I would

definitely look into the OCD connection with your daughter. So many of these

disorders are related, it seems. There is another mom on this site with a child

with ADHD, Tourettes, and OCD. She might have good insight for you. Good

luck! Kelley in NV

Hi Zizzi yes everything you've written about your daughter is or has been true

of mine, 9, whose dx is OCD +tics. My daughter is not a handwasher either and

has not so far had any OCD concerns about contamination or dirtiness. She even

had the same compulsion about throwing toys from the car window!

Another thing that may point to some OCD in her is her Tourette's dx, since many

kids with one or the other of these diagnoses have at least some symptoms of the

other, and sometimes sufficient symptoms to qualify for both diagnoses.

Does your daughter take any medication for the Tourette's or ADD? I ask because

those types of meds can bring out or worsen OCD-type symptoms. (The reverse is

true too, the SSRIs used to treat OCD can " unmask " or worsen tics and/or

Tourette's, and ADD.)

I am so curious, what is Rhiannonm?

Take care,

Dear Zizzi,

I'm way behind on reading these posts, and I know you've heard many

responses already - but allow me to say that you have described my ten year

old daughter Annie exactly. She has OCD/ ADHD/ TS. She has gotten the OCD under

control for the most part through medication and exposure and response

prevention therapy. The TS has been a problem this spring, after being just

barely

noticeable until now. So now she is on Clonidine for the tics and that is

better. The real bear for us has been the ADHD and the school work problems -

just

as you describe. If she gets something done, she doesn't turn it in. Half of

her papers are disastrous, the others perfect (she gets A's and F's - almost

never anything in between - which makes her teachers think she is just being

lazy). Adding Clonidine to her other meds this spring made an enormous

difference

in her school work - I know they sometimes use it for ADHD and now I see why.

Your daughter's descriptions of her thoughts sound very much like

OCD to me - especially the car window one. But really, in my humble opinion, OCD

is sometimes easier to treat than what you have already been dealing with!!

It is late here, and Annie is refusing to go to bed so I need to go

- but keep in touch and tell us how things go with your daughter!

in NV, mom to Annie (10) with OCD/ ADHD/ TS on Celexa, Concerta,

Risperdal and Clonidine...

Ugh...I hope its not that stupid Pikachu one. My son did that one for about

6 months a couple of years back.

BTW - just suddenly started doing some other tics, within the last

week. He now repeats words " I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm

sorry...SQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAK. " I know that repeating words is typical of

OCD/Tourette's...but why all of a sudden would he start, after never doing

it before??
