Guest guest
Hi Melody - Happy Anniversary, a bit tardily.  If you have any interest in making California Rolls, there is an excellent recipe and tutorial on Dr. Ben Kim's website. Complete with beautiful close-up pics and everything! (Sorry, no YouTube video - that's your department ;>) See it at www.drbenkim.com Warning: it looks just a bit tricky, but I know you could make a great video of the process!  And BTW, his coconut oil is the best I have ever tasted. I often eat it straight from the jar!  Cheers! Guest guest
When I first moved to San Diego there used to be a Japanese restaurant that made the ABSOLUTE BEST shrimp tempura! I am salivating right now just thinking about it. Sadly, the restaurant closed, but it was really the best. The booths had a sunken well where the table was attached and you sat on cushions and put your (shoeless, please) feet down in the well. The table was just at the right height for eating in that position. (No, not eating the table - I'm tired, so not expressing myself too well right now.) A bottle of Sake, some beef w/pea pods, shrimp tempura, and cashew chicken made a wonderful evening out. Delicious! Not even sure whether all the dishes were Japanese or possibly Chinese, but no matter...TDF!  Lucky you to have a Benihana-style restaurant around the corner. My daughter said her husband took her and the kids to a similar place for Mother's Day and my grandson said it was the best food he's ever had (he's 9). I guess the kids really enjoyed watching the chef prepare the meal.  Peggy  ps...I think Dr. Kim said Calirosa rice? Maybe I'm mistaken there - but I'm sure it is sushi rice. To: sproutpeople Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2011 3:50 PM Subject: Re: Re: My mothers day  Hi. Thank you for your nice wishes. And I tried to learn how to make California rolls a long time ago. Bought the nori wraps, had the rice in the house, bought the avocado, THEN I LEARNED YOU NEED SUSHI RICE, not regular rice. But I do make sprouts in the Nori which is GOOD!!! But my favorite food on the planet is Japanese. They make it right in front of you. I know the restaurant. The lunch is $5.50. You can't beat it. So whenever we want to go anywhere, we simply walk around the corner and there it is. Alan can't drive any more due to his neuropathy and he uses either a quad cane or a rollator, so around the corner is just dandy for us. And one of these days, we might even try squeezing into one of those tables that can fit only little people. lol Mel > > > > > > > > My birthday is on Cinco De Mayo, so of course I had to work. Guest guest
Tina, this is grand. Truly, I believe that in the next couple of years with the economy (and floods and climate change) going the way it's going, we will all need " family " - BJ is exactly where he needs to be, and (at the risk of offending our more traditional religious people) whatever that karmic relationship is - it's of benefit for both of you. pam May the Light that is You illuminate not only your path, but all who are fortunate to be Blessed by your Radiance. > This was my first Mother's Day to be the " Mother " . I've wanted to be a mom for a very long time. A decade or so ago I actually spoke with an adoption agency about adopting as a single mother. They were agreeable but I realized that I did not have the support network I'd need (and I was still dealing with a lot of issues of my own). Anywhoo...A year ago a young man (18 at the time) started talking to me at church and was soon calling me " Mom " . Three months ago, my mom and I opened our home to him as we'd discovered that he was in a verbally and physically abusive sitation with his father. Guest guest
LOL - no banging? Truly I wonder WHAT he was banging <G> Have to admit, my mind went to the slang interp of " banging " - but, maybe he was opening clams or oyster shells, or even the 5 gallon buckets that things come in (if so, Mel, GRAB those buckets. = if you need me to send you a link as to why, let me know, LOL pam May the Light that is You illuminate not only your path, but all who are fortunate to be Blessed by your Radiance. > Oh, I've misled you. Not a Benihana kind of restaurant (where the chef throws things up and they land in his pocket), God I miss that place. Been to Benihana MANY times. We would all sit (10 people) around the same table. It's very hard to eat in a calm atmosphere when this banging is going on. Guest guest
Did you live in Japan, or were you visiting? How interesting! I can see where a hibachi would be a good idea to keep the tootsies warm during dinner, but we seldom need that in sunny San Diego. I have not heard of the " socks for Japan " thing - can you enlighten me? I don't knit socks, but do scarves and hats. Also, I am certainly able to purchase socks if that is the focused need. Guest guest
What a beautiful story - thanks for sharing it! You certainly don't need to apologize to me for " bending my ear " - this is the stuff of life and is inspiring to read.  Don't worry about " living up " to motherhood. Believe me, it's an impossible job and I've yet to meet the person who has done or is doing it w/o at least regrets if not outright guilt. Don't take those trips - we are human, after all, and the vast majority of us are doing the best job we can. You are obviously a great light in BJs life - God bless you and your Mom for your courage and compassion.  Peggy To: sproutpeople Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2011 7:33 PM Subject: Re: Re: My mothers day  This was my first Mother's Day to be the " Mother " . Guest guest
Thank you for that information, Pam. I would like to participate and will make that a priority this week. I am having breakfast with a friend tomorrow and will print out the info for her as well. I'm sorry I didn't know of this earlier, but glad I am not altogether too late to help. What a splendid effort! Take care, Peggy To: sproutpeople Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2011 9:34 PM Subject: Re: Re: My mothers day I lived in Japan from 53 to 55. Guest guest
Forgot to say that my youngest granddaughter will be 7 on Saturday the 14th. Her parents have always encouraged the children to give generously and I plan to send a note telling her that my donation will be sent in her name. She will be very happy about that. She will be able to read my note by herself, so that will make it even more special. Thanks again! Guest guest
Very well said, Melody. God Bless you Tina, too, for what you are doing for BJ. Guest guest
And BTW, I am also " one of those " and I don't spend my time looking for yet another way to be offended. That seems to be a major pastime of many in our world these days. What a colossal waste of time and energy.  You're doing just fine! Thanks again for your story.  Peggy To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, May 11, 2011 3:53 AM Subject: Re: My mothers day  Thanks! I needed to hear that! Tina > > What a beautiful story - thanks for sharing it! >  > Peggy > > > To: sproutpeople > Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2011 7:33 PM > Subject: Re: Re: My mothers day > > >  > > This was my first Mother's Day to be the " Mother " . Thus, I became a Mom. > > He gave me a gift Sunday--a plaque. The last line reads " I want to thank you, Mom, and tell you lovingly you are the best thing life has given to me! He hasn't been able to find a job but he works his butt off around here--yard work, gardening, housework. Things had gotten rather overwhelming for mom and I the last few years and BJ is helping us get caught up. He is so excited to learn to eat healthy foods and grow our own veggies and the future plans for chickens and ducks and rabbits and dairy goats. He sometimes seems like a 19yo going on 14yo but knowing his background explains much of that. > > So, anyway, sorry for bending ya'lls ear on such an off-topic topic...I still can't believe I'm a mom at 47! > > Tina > > > > >
