Guest guest
Hi Sonja, I just went through a revision with Dr. K and this is one of the topics I brought up at my post op appointment. I to give blood on a regular basis. He said it was ok to give as long as your labs have been good. They check for iron deficiency prior to taking any blood so this would give them and you a sign that you may not be suitable for donation if a deficiency was noted. I am not sure how far out you are or how your labs have been running but I know I will not attempt again until I am at least a year out and have had at least 2 good draws for vitamin levels, especially iron. It is just to hard to get back up if you bottom out and I would not want to risk health for giving blood. > > Hello, All: > > > > I would like to give blood this weekend at our church-sponsored blood drive. > > > > I'm in good health, and four years out from the GRDS surgery. > > > > I know Dr. K says no, at least in the beginning. Guest guest
I personally will never donate blood unless it is someone I personally know and they are in deep need. Then if I crashed I would just have to work on building back up. Doing a very honorable deed and donating isn't worth risking YOUR personal health. I've seen people crash after donating blood. It is " MY " stance. Yes they do a finger stick and check iron before a blood draw but that is such a Narrow look into the total picture. You're in good health...stay that way! Volunteer to work at the blood drive. Guest guest
I am going to have to side with Jo on this one. Even numbers that LOOK good can be a little too close to the bottom range to protect you in unexpected circumstance. One of the things we can't do after our surgeries but we have gained SO much more. Best Wishes Re: Giving Blood? I personally will never donate blood unless it is someone I personally know and they are in deep need. Then if I crashed I would just have to work on building back up. Guest guest
Sorry, my surgeons say 'no'. (I did get a concession from them that I could do it for a family member or myself). It's hard b/c I used to do it several times a year. They just feel it's an unnecessary risk. A. ---------------- Duodenal Switch/Lap -- Drs. Guest guest
I asked Dr this very question. His answer was ask him and he will look at your labs and together get you to a place where giving blood won’t your body. Those of you who get him to your meetings are so lucky. Being up so far north we had him at one meeting. Had a blast with total access to his mind.
