Guest guest
My son is 8 y/o and is NT...mostly. He has ADHD and suffers from migraines...but that is all. Anyway, his handwriting is HORRID! He is very smart but doesn't seem to be able to write neatly and spell correctly. It's not a spelling issue per say. He spells very well when he studies. He can spell a word correctly when he is taking a spelling test but then turn around the next day (or hour) and spell it incorrectly when writing it in a sentence. I don't think it is just an ADHD thing either. His teacher decided to do an SST on him. She ended up having to have surgery last week and will now be out of the classroom for the next 3-5 weeks. I volunteer in the classroom on Thursdays so I decided to go talk to the principal about it while I was there. I don't want to delay getting him help just because his teacher isn't there. The principal is the most wonderful lady. She is amazing with the kids. She actually cares for them and knows most of 800+ kids' names. Anyway, she agreed that this can't wait until his teacher returns. She said she would personally look into it. She wanted a note from his Dr stating that he has ADHD so she could start the process of maybe getting him a 504. This is so she can get some services by going through the backdoor. Anyway, I called the Dr and was able to get the note right away. I came home and emailed her the note. First thing Friday morning she emailed the OT and requested an eval. It just happened to be the day the OT was at our school. She did the preliminary eval on him (he said he wrote 'really nice' on some worksheets she gave him). Later that day (Friday) the principal emailed me and told me that the "OT feels that we will need to go forward with some academic testing and also a full OT evaluation to look at sensory and visual-motor issues." She said that she is going to follow through with a TAP which will "move things along more quickly". I guess we will have a meeting and at that meeting I will sign the consent form and then he'll be placed on the list to be tested. I wish they would just send the form home an put him on the list now. Anyone have any idea what might be the problem? I hate this waiting (it's only been a day!). What is the difference between a SST and a TAP? Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you; Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul; the other for your freedom. Guest guest
BTW, TAP seems to = Timely and Appropriate Placements and SST is like an ARD commitee... Referral to the Student Study Team (SST) The SST meeting is a team meeting that usually consists of one of the student's general education teachers (quite possibly you), an administrator, the child's parents, and (depending on the concerns) specialists such as the Special Education teacher , Speech and Language Pathologist , school psychologist, or Occupational Therapist. On occasion it may be appropriate to invite the student to the meeting. > > > > My son is 8 y/o and is NT...mostly. He has ADHD and suffers from migraines.. > > but that is all. Guest guest
Okay, back to dysgraphia... What is dysgraphia? In its most general sense, dysgraphia is difficulty with handwriting that's connected to problems with fine motor skills. It does take different forms that need to be understood in order to be treated correctly, and it's always recommended to consult a specialist if you have any concerns. A child with dysgraphia won't necessarily be dyslexic or dyspraxic (though the conditions are often linked). For example, dysgraphia won't necessarily affect oral spelling; so, a child could be an excellent oral speller, but be very poor when it comes to writing words out on paper. Because this may indicate that the condition isn't dyslexic, it can be treated differently. > > > > > > My son is 8 y/o and is NT...mostly. Guest guest
I would not wait for an SST panel to use time to likely sit and guess about whats wrongor to how to maybe remedy the challenges. I would ask for a panel of evaluations related to the challenge, delay or weakness. If you can afford it, pay for an indy assessment. Then the SST /IEP will have to hard data and information to review discuss and consider to make a well informed decision.Kim McClainSpecial Needs Advocate & Family Consultant Mobile Fax McClainAutismAdvocate@...----- Reply message -----To: <autism-aspergers >Subject: Re: Question about my NT sonDate: Sun, Jan 29, 2012 9:03 am BTW, TAP seems to = Timely and Appropriate Placements and SST is like an ARD commitee...
