Re: [DS_Friends_Keshishian Thanks! I really appreciate your comments. I know that protien comes first. I am making sure to eat lots of beans, tofu, soy etc. I was actually really surprised to see how much protien is in vegetables. Plus I am not trying to go vegan, so I still eat eggs amd milk products. I eat waay to much to really be concerned about lack of protien. I have focused on it for years and it is the one problem I have never had! Calcium has been a pain in my you know what. I can't figure out how to take it four times a day but not too close to my thyroid meds in the morning or my iron pill in the evening. I can't tell you how many different types I have tried. Dee told me to get the super vit D on vitalady.com a few months ago. I have been taking one of those a week (like she told me) ever since then. Plus I found chewable bariatric multi vitams that are high in ADEK. And I have been taking those also. I feel like I have come a long way from total non-compliance but still struggle to follow their recommendations. I guess I feel like who am I to ask for help from them when I'm not doing their program 100%, even if its because I don't have 100% to give? This was my first step. Talking to all of you. Next I hope to attend the Sacramento support group in June. > > , I don't know you, but I don't understand why you don't think we > wouldn't love and understand. Guest guest
Yes, , I almost died -- I was in worse shape than Dee was. Dr. K said that I was about a week away from 'so sorry, too late.' That was this past February. Re: [DS_Friends_Keshishian I really have been away a while...I don't know what happened. I know that Dee got really sick but you did too? . Guest guest
, it came on gradually and I attributed it to other things. I have endured Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for over 20 years. I began to be weaker and weaker and thought it was just the CFS acting up again. Then I developed a horrible cough that I thought was my bronchitis acting up. All of this started in last Summer. When I went over to Marta's for a Kristy day, Marta told me I didn't look too well and asked about my cough. I told her it was bronchitis. Marta, knowing how intelligent I am, didn't press the matter because she was sure I would know if something was amiss. Things progressed until December when I could no longer function. I was sleeping 18+ hours a day and I could not muster enough strength to even do my own shopping. when I walked to the bathroom, I would actually have to nap before I could walk back to my recliner. I had to start using a cane because when I could get out of the bed/chair, I couldn't walk straight. I was so weak that I couldn't even talk on the telephone. I also had to drop all my classes as I had not attended since the first week of class in September. In February, my niece wet to see Dr. K about being switched. When he saw her last name, he asked if she was related to me. When she answered, " yes, " he asked how I was and she told him I looked horrible and the whole family was sure I was going to die. (An opinion shared by everyone who actually saw me.) He left the room and had Dee telephone to quiz me. After a few minutes, she told me to be in the office the next day -- she did not ask me to come in; she told me to be there at 11 a.m. I could not drive myself and my niece and nephew had to assist me into the building and up the elevator. When I went in Dr. K saw me in the hallway and said " you're going to hospital now. " They took me in a wheel chair. I was in hospital for 10 or 11 days (I cant remember exactly). They found that my vitamin levels were virtually zero and that my calcium level was critical. As for the cough, Dr. K called in a specialist and we found out it was/is chronic asthma. The consensus was that I've had it all my life but, because I was fat, it was undiagnosed (all fat people are tired and short of breath -- no need to look for any other cause). I also believe that I had a blood transfusion as well, but the whole hospital experience is very unclear as I was out cold most of the time. Dr. K saved my life a second time, the first being the DS. I am alive today only because he recognized " danger " in what my niece described, acted on that danger signal and told me to get my butt over there (in not nice terms by the way). He told me that part of my problem was that by the time I finally called the office, it was weeks after I should have been examined. I have osteoporosis so I'm on huge doses of calcium each day and massive doses of Vitamin K. I've also gone to liquid vitamins on an exclusive basis and make sure to drink them 30-minutes prior to eating anything. I'm also on a steroid inhaler and a 'regular' inhaler for the asthma. You must, I repeat, YOU MUST take your calcium and vitamin K -- and all your vitamins. Remember that the recommended dose is not necessarily an adequate dose for us. err on the side of too much and the body will eliminate the excess. This is the first time I've actually told most of this story, but you asked, and I'm concerned about YOUR health because of what happened to me. Take your supplements and tell your sister to take hers, too. Don't make me drive up there and slap you around. I might enjoy it too much and become addicted to slapping non compliant DSers around. :-) Jim _____________________________ © 2008 The contents of this email message, including any and all attachments, are intended solely for the use of the person or entity to whom the email was addressed. Re: [DS_Friends_Keshishian I am so sorry to hear that! Did you have and signs or symptoms? Or did it come on suddently? I have been worried ever since my vit D got so low. I have been getting labs periotically though and sending them to Dr K's office. However, they haven't said anything about them, so I'm not really sure they got them. My sister, , had the surgery a few weeks before me and I worry because I know she doesn't take supplements at all. I have tried to get her to see the light.*sigh* . Guest guest
First, I didn't see any type of disrespect in your posts directed toward Dr. K or the office. One thing that I would suggest is that we never " take " our labs with us to Dr. K's office. we need to have them faxed over well before our appointment. That way the office has a chance to really examine them. When Dr. K sees them at the last minute, it's difficult to offer suggestions or solutions.. I'm not yelling at you, by the way. Many people (a friend of mine included) always hand carry the lab work and then wonders why doctor never says much about them. I agree that most GPs (oh, sorry, PCPs) don't understand " us " or want to talk with Dr. K when a problem arises. I have made it crystal clear to my GP that he WILL consult with Dr. K. At one appointment, he was giving me a wee hard time about consulting Dr. K, so I opened my mobile phone and telephoned Dr. k's office my self and handed the phone to my GP. When I need to go to the ER for something, I list Dr. K as my primary doctor and never mention the local doctor **if** I think the problem may be DS related. I have pretty good luck that way. It is all up to us to force the GPs hand and I'm pretty good about that. Dee turned me on to caltrate from Vitalady. It is 600 mg per tablet and they are chewable and rather nice tasting. I follow Dee's recommendation and keep the bottle handy and pop one in my mouth every couple of hours. The rest of my vitamins, iron, and thyroid medication I take first thing in the morning. Then I don't have to worry about the calcium " mixing " problem. .

Re: [DS_Friends_Keshishian Jim, Although I've not had the pleasure of meeting you face to face, I had to wipe tears from my eyes after reading the story of your decline and near demise! I am so sorry to learn what you endured! You seem so upbeat, always making me smile with your quips and retorts, I just can't imagine you being in that shape. I am so glad Dr. K slapped YOU upside the head when he did! This group would definitely NOT be the same without you! Thanks so much for sharing your story and for being an inspiration for all of us!! Guest guest
Jim, Okay I read your message to and now know what and why. I have one question though. I thought vitamin K was to help our blood clot. What does it have to do with calcium absorbtion? Bonnie Jim wrote: , it came on gradually and I attributed it to other things. Guest guest
The oseto and the horrible pain I lived with for months was directly related to the calcium deficiency. For whatever reason my body needed far more than the minimum dosage I was told to take. Re: Re: [DS_Friends_Keshishian Jim, Was your illness a calcium related issue? What happened? Bonnie . Guest guest
As I understand it, and Jo or Marta will correct me, Vit. K helps with the absorption of calcium.
