Ah man...certainly sounds like classic autism. My son was dx at 20 months. Good that you are beingSo proactive to get him the help andEarly intervention! He is 10 now...time flies!Sent from my iPhone

LAst time I wrote I was concerned about my 18 month old having Aspergers. Well since then His Dr. has finally listened to me and he has now had an eval at early steps. And had his first appt. with a Therapist. Who is now sending him to be tested for ASD. And also found out that he might have have a hearing impairment in his right ear. His therapist informed me during the first visit with Colton that he believes he is Autistic for sure. And he is also being put on a waiting list for Achievement Academy. A school in town where Colton can see his speech pathologist and physical and occupational therapist. Colton is now almost 20 months old and his tantrums are much more often and severe. Just in the past 3 weeks he has had 3 black eyes and a bruise where bit his self. His rocking is more violent, His hitting,

hair pulling and head butting is a lot more frequent. Almost always walks on his toes. And still doesnt point to anything or even try to let you know what he wants. And still doesnt say a word. :(

It's frustrating but at least with your persistence your dr listened to you. My pediatrician basically blew me off and provided no immediate guidance. So consider yourself lucky that your son is getting evaluated early. Also, that's great they you are so informed on the characteristics of autism so you were able to advocate better for your son. I hope they do a thorough eval and never let them tell you "He will grow out of it." or worse "All kids do that.". As a friend once told me "If they say that all kids do such and such (like tantrums) then respond by saying: Yes, but children on the spectrum do it with higher frequency, with more intensity and for a longer duration." I've said this to the so called specialists at the school district and they have no response. The know they can't blow you off with bullshit answers if they know you know what you are talking about and don't back down for ANY reason. It's so important as a parent advocate to have the verbal ammunition to defend your child. Good luck! Gladys

I am so glad you're getting early intervention. My kids were 6 and 8 before we got help.Something I heard recently. Forgive me if I bungle this, but according to chinese reflexology the gut is connected to the bottom of the foot and a lot of toe walkers have lots of trouble with stomach/food allergies/sensitivities, even if he can't explain that at his age, may be worth looking into, especially since it's so common with ASD.

My 9 yr. old started up again pulling her hair and banging head against the wall. Its absolutely awful, I am so sorry!

This awful experience has taught me to stand up for my child more than what I thought I could! I'm grateful for that because this will translate into other areas of my life. I think it's very important to know how to defend oneself verbally. I'm pretty good at defending myself in written format but that's because I have a little more time to think about it so I'm glad to be having this experience where I have to think on my feet and defend what is important to me. It's still not easy and I get stressed out about it but I think with practice I will learn to actually enjoy to defend son and my family. I guess this is the positive side of going through all this. On a side note does anyone get offended if I curse in my responses sometimes but not at somebody here but when I'm talking about the so-called specialists? I don't think so but I just thought I'd ask because that's how I express myself with people that I'm comfortable with sometimes. :-) Gladys

I can't speak for everyone, but you won't be moderated for it.

While my immediate family were middle class and sort-of respectable

(eccentric in a respectable way?), much of my father's family tended

to struggle with life, often partly because of how they responded to

it.  Any swear words you use on here I probably learnt before I went

to school.  I've never seen the point of using certain words

(particularly the 'F' word) merely as punctuation or emphasis, but

sometimes the swear words are the most appropriate to use.   Name

calling of other members is not allowed, not matter what words are

used.

Thanks, . I'm sure I probably won't be swearing very much. Just basically how I used those words in my previous post. I just noticed people putting acronyms for swear words so it got me thinking. And of course, I completely understand the policy of never putting anyone down no matter what words are used. That's something I grew up with & it's just not something I do. Thanks for the clarification. :-) Gladys

OMG!! ok, So I had to take Colton to the hospital for this weird rash he was having and while we were there he started to get really antsy and impatient. I was holding him cause if I put him down hes like a baby I have to still chase him and hes just constantly looking for stuff to mess with and get into. And his new thing is pulling my hair, My hair comes down to the lower part of my back and here lately when he gets mad he just grabs it and pulls as much of it as he can then looks at his hand to see what hes got. Well during all this hes screaming in rage at the top of his lungs and beating me in the face. And I cant help but notice every single person in the E.R. was staring at us. I really HATE going into public with him. It doesn't help that I don't know how to handle situations like this. Anyone have any ideas? Please let me

know!! -Sara To: "autism-aspergers " <autism-aspergers > Sent: Friday, March 30, 2012 5:16 PM Subject: Re: Finally got an Eval

Well what made her listen to me actually was when I brought my mom to the appt. so that she could pretty much verify what was going on with him. And she told the Dr. what she has witnessed him doing. She has been telling me for over a year that we should just watch it and keep an eye on it. Once Asd was brought up the first time I went home and kinda did my own research on it and found a lot of helpful information and joined this group and talked to people on here. And it has helped so much. His Neurologist actually told me that his rocking back and forth was normal and all kids

do it. Yeah right!!! Then she sent him to have an MRI done which she told me was normal. But doesn't mean anything. I found out through his therapist that I guess a lot of people

have had problems with her saying that to people because she doesn't want to give anyone a label, because she doesn't want them to collect social security. To: "autism-aspergers " <autism-aspergers > Sent: Friday, March 30, 2012 6:19 PM Subject: Re: Finally got an

It's so important as a parent

advocate to have the verbal ammunition to defend your child. Good luck! Gladys

Just in the past 3 weeks he has had 3 black eyes and a

bruise where

bit his self. His rocking is more violent, His hitting,

hair pulling and head butting is a lot more frequent. Almost always walks on his toes. And still doesnt point to anything or even try to let you know what he wants. And still doesnt say a word. :(

Like they couldn't go to another doctor and get the dx. Dumb! The dx alone

doesn't equal social security!

I have said it before and will say it again...

I don't like neurologists!

They rarely dx autism and they just want those MRI s for research!

Ugh!

Sorry!  You are a good mom for pushing what you knew in your heart!

Well what made her listen to me actually was when I brought my mom to the

appt. so that she could pretty much verify what was going on with him. And she

told the Dr. what she has witnessed him doing. She has been telling me for over

a year that we should just watch it and keep an eye on it. Once Asd was brought

up the first time I went home and kinda did my own research on it and found a

lot of helpful information and joined this group and talked to people on here.

And it has helped so much. His Neurologist actually told me that his rocking

back and forth was normal and all kids do it. Yeah right!!! Then she sent him to

have an MRI done which she told me was normal. But doesn't mean anything. I

found out through his therapist that I guess a lot of people have had problems

with her saying that to people because she doesn't want to give anyone a label,

because she doesn't want them to collect social security.

It's frustrating but at least with your persistence your dr listened to you. My

pediatrician basically blew me off and provided no immediate guidance. So

consider yourself lucky that your son is getting evaluated early. Also, that's

great they you are so informed on the characteristics of autism so you were able

to advocate better for your son. I hope they do a thorough eval and never let

them tell you " He will grow out of it. " or worse " All kids do that. " . As a

friend once told me " If they say that all kids do such and such (like tantrums)

then respond by saying: Yes, but children on the spectrum do it with higher

frequency, with more intensity and for a longer duration. " I've said this to the

so called specialists at the school district and they have no response. The know

they can't blow you off with bullshit answers if they know you know what you are

talking about and don't back down for ANY reason.  It's so important as a

parent advocate to have the verbal ammunition to defend your child. Good luck!
