Dear Grazia,

I have been in that place several times with my

husband, Jim, I have found three ways that causes this

behavior with my husband.

1.) He wants his independence in decision making and

if I say it's time for a shower, it's on my time and

not his and it becomes a power struggle. It is not

something he wants to do at that time. I have learned

to drop it. It's not worth the aggressiveness and

struggle to get him to take a shower. He will not die

without it at that time. It is not a matter of life

and death and he will come around when he is ready to

take the shower. In the meantime, after he calms down,

he will most of the time allow me to give him a sponge

bath until he is ready for an actual shower. With this

behavior his aggression and confusion only last as

long as the power struggle lasts. When the struggle is

dropped the aggression defuses.

2.) He has a UTI, Pneumonia or some kind of

infection and should be tested. These kind of things

almost always cause my husband to be very confused and

aggressive and is a good sign that he needs medical

attention. His confusion and aggressiveness will last

for days if he is not treated.

3.) He has had some kind of surgery and anesthesia was

used. When the anesthesia wears off, he becomes almost

violent and extraordinarily confused.

When things get really at the point where my husband

is very aggressive, I call in the paramedics. They

take him to the hospital and he gets the treatment he

needs, usually antibiotics for infection.

I hope you find your answers........Jan Colello
