Guest guest
You should think positively - she has an interest that believe me isn't as bizarre as some of the interests our children have - It could lead to good things. Also she is communicating with you. Work on those skills and who knows... Oh and dressing her stuffed animals shows allot of imagination - another good thing. My Daughter is 12yrs OLD She still plays with toys especially stuff animal. Heoct complusiveness now is lions tigers and there cubs. She watch animal planet every day. She take one or two anilal to school every day because she was so unhappy to go and now no complain. She doesn't have any social skills. She is DX with PDD/NOS an MILD MR. She says she wants to be a zoo keeper I know I should have hope but the DR doesn't think she be able to take care of herself ever. She even dresses her stuff animals. Guest guest
Read this article. I have read several things about this lady and she is very successful working with animals. A lot of autistic children relate well to animals. She may LOVE hippotherapy. it is a mix of occupational therapy and speech therapy on a horse, or she might do really well with an autistic service dog. Many autistic children are obsessive on one area or another. These children relate amazingly well to animals. My sons obsession is electronics and the violin. He will probably be an amazing computer programer but I will still have to lay out his clothes every morning and he will probably work alone. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9902E0DB103DF936A3575BC0A961958260 & sec= & spon= & pagewanted=2 wrote: You should think positively - she has an interest that believe me isn't as bizarre as some of the interests our children have - It could lead to good things. Guest guest
I have two kids on the spectrum. is HFA and turns 13 this month and still sleeps with teddy bear and wants to work with animals and draws pics of them and role plays with toys. is 11 and nonverbal and shows interest in toys here and there, especially when we had floor time therapy. Sometimes he plays with the teddybear. I see nothing wrong with what your daughter does and wondered what the issue is or reason for posting about her age. I have never discussed the future with a Dr and think that would be inappropriate for a Dr to say such things to a parent. Perhaps some books should be read to give you some encouragement. It seems you are embarassed by your daughter and her interests?? Guest guest
I would be upset if a Dr. told me something like that. She may not be ble to do it on her own, but as a member of our county's Board of MR/DD. I know things can be done to help people with special needs reach their goals. In our community we have a day provider that uses a small farm, where her clients learn how to care completely for the animals. No, it is not lions or even in a zoo (the closest zoo around here is 1 & 1/2 hrs away), but it's the care of the animals that is the thrill. Don't let anyone crush her dreams (or yours). As for the playing with toys, there is nothing wrong with that. Society has taught us that once you hit a certain age you should hide the child in you. I don't know about you but one of the coolest things about having small children is the fact you can play with toys again, and no one thinks your odd. I love to sit and color or swing at a park. Society has made this decision. I love the fact your daughter has made her own decision. Believe me going against the norm is sometimes a good thing. > > She still plays with toys especially stuff animal. Heoct complusiveness > now is lions tigers and there cubs. Guest guest
don't loose hope. my son is also 12. his thing is dinosaurs. he wants to goto mongolia and be a palentologist when he turns 18. he thinks he can just go and do it as soon as he turns 18. when we try to ask him where the money is gonna come from for the plane ticket he'll say that he doesn't need money he's gonna take a boat. i don't know if he'll ever go out on his own but we keep working with him like he will. these children are capable of so much and are so beautiful. even a dr. with the best intentions can be wrong. wrote: She still plays with toys especially stuff animal. Guest guest
Well said, Holly. You really made me laugh as I feel my 11 year old is incredibly intelligent, very high IQ and I'm hoping to direct it toward computer programming. He has trouble getting dressed and I envision him working alone. His social skills are incredibly poor but his brilliant academically. His brain is just amazing when it comes to learning. He totally impresses me and can accomplish great things, but not others. He can't ride a bike, tie his shoes, etc. The only way he'll play catch with me (I love this!) is if we use a blow up ball we got from subscribing to National Geographic for Kids. It's a globe ball. I'll look at the ball pick a country, throw it to him and he'll have to find it. He's so excited about excelling at his way above average skills at geography that he doesn't focus on playing catch. He recently played trivial pursuit for kids with a few kids (relatives) who's parents are spending $60,000. on their education per year. My son blew them away. I capitalize on his interest in education and the school allows him to skip recess (a nightmare!) and instead he uses a school computer to take attendance for the school. He's been doing that since 3rd grade!!! So, I agree with you. the mom who's daughter is directed toward animals should be capitalized on and be taught things under the guize of an animal theme. Who knows, she can be a dog trainer or something else with animals. My son said the other day he wants to be a scientist. You never know. Maybe he can work with one other person somewhere ... of course, Mom will have to drive him to work because there is no way he'll have the coordination and appropriate focus to drive. I laugh about it to myself because it is what it is. If there is something our kids latch on to and can motivate them, it's always good. My boy did not connect to any stuffed animal and certainly couldn't/wouldn't think of dressing them. All I have to say is I'm grateful for velcro. It's helped my son tremendously because shoelaces, buttons, etc. are so difficult. Judie West Palm Beach, FL Mom to 11 with Asperger's/Bipolar and more ... Guest guest
Hi Everyone, This weekend my son and I were researching books on the internet, using Amazon.com and and Noble. He's an avid reader at age 11 and we're on a constant search for books. My sister recently bought him the boxed set of The Spiderwick Chronicles. It included 5 or 6 books. He read them all in one day and loved them. In our research, we came upon a book called "All Cats Have Asperger's Syndrome written by Kathy Hoopmen. We have 2 cats and my son was so excited by the title. I can't recommend it yet as we haven't read it. I read the reviews and amazon readers gave it excellent recommendations where and Noble some people gave it less than favorable reviews. They felt it didn't make the connection strongly enough regarding cats and aspies. We don't care and will get it anyway. I'm looking for a series of "boy" books that has a lot of books in the series. He loves reading book after book with the same characters. He read all the Harry Potter books so quickly last year. His reading skills are amazing. He's also read the "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" which he loved. He has tons of books about U.S. Presidents as he loves history. He ready many of the Magic Treehouse books which he loved a few years ago but now feels they're too babyish. He's also read many Hardy Boy books but he feels they are outdated and can't compare to the types of books for boys now with many high tech types of things in them. So if anyone has a recommendation for a series of books that are written for children older than 11 (he was reading on a 9th grade level in 1st grade!) I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.
