Guest guest
I have a recipe but haven't tried because of the expense of the almonds. If you can use the pre-made almond milk, Publix now carries Almond Breeze in 1/2 gallon sizes in the refrigerated section with the soy and rice milks and it is only $2.50 for a 1/2 gallon. In the carton is is something like $3.29 for only a quart. The shelf life is only about 3 - 4 weeks on the refrigerated 1/2 gallon Almond Breeze as opposed to the 6 or more month long shelf life of the quart-sized carton you get on the shelf but, the consistency of the refrigerated 1/2 gallon is thicker and more like real milk. If you can use the pre-made almond milk with your child, you could ask the manager of your Publix to get some if they don't already have it. Also would it be less expansive then 10.00 a gallon ? Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Guest guest
Our family was big into Almond Milk until we read this information from Mercola. Apparently, there has been a lot of issue in the past with the almond industry's pasteurization process. http://v.mercola.com/blogs/public_blog/Almond---Pasteurization---May-be-Worse-Than-Previously-Thought-13205.aspx You may recall an article I posted earlier this month regarding the concerns surrounding the relaxed labeling of irradiated foods, like almonds, by the FDA.Earlier this month, I received a letter from Waycott, the president and CEO of the Almond Board of California (ABC), to tell me that his organization will not use any heating or radiation to "pasteurize" their almonds. He explained that they will instead be using propylene oxide to "pasteurize" the almonds.Mr. Waycott provides the following reassurance: "Pasteurized raw almonds do not differ in any significant way -- taste, quality or nutritional value -- from untreated almonds. Pasteurization simply reduces the presence of harmful bacteria on those almonds to safe levels while maintaining taste, quality and nutritional value."I then called his office to see if there was anything he wanted to add to his letter, and he said that the EPA had tested propylene oxide and found it to be safe.So now we can relax? Hardly.Apparently, Mr. Waycott expects me to accept his propaganda without one single scientific reference to support his safety assertion. Even a simple search for propylene oxide in Wikipedia provides the following information:"Propylene oxide is a highly toxic flammable chemical compound. It was once used as a racing fuel, but that usage is now prohibited under the U.S. National Hot Rod Association rules for safety reasons. It is also used in thermobaric weapons. It is an epoxide."The Almond Board is not using a GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) substance, safe for human ingestion, unless they are arguing it's flashed off in evaporation or heating, which also mean the almonds are NOT natural and raw. You can see the EPA site for more details. The bottom line is that if any process kills bacteria, it has the potential to cause problems in humans or significantly change the quality of the food. No, Mr. Waycott, I don't buy your flimsy reassurances, but I do appreciate your warning of this previously unknown way that you can damage our food supply. Guest guest
Yes, that would be true of milk you make yourself from Almonds. However, the manufacturer has added these to the milk if you are referring to a product such as Almond Breeze which contains almost if not the same amount of Calcium as your regular milk. Also, it does not appear that the Cholesterol is an issue with their milk either. I would see where they would say that if you were referring to homemade almond milk. My pediatrician is very excited we have found something our son enjoys to drink that provides him with the Calcium, Vitamin D, and even Cholesterol because they need it. Maybe if you showed them the nutrition information from what you are providing they would not be as concerned. Just a suggestion. Sometimes we have to actually educate our pediatricians, especially when we change or child's diet. > > > Subject: Almond Milk > To: " Autism Main " <autism-georgia >, " Autism North " <nfasg > > Date: Friday, April 10, 2009, 4:54 PM > > > > > > > > > > The Kroger in milledgeville now carries the almond milk. > > This will help us out so so much.
