Guest guest
Hello We currently live in WI and have a 8 year old second grader with autism (mid functioning). We are considering relocation from WI for better opps for his Dad and I am interested to find out about what services would be available in NC (Raleigh/ Charlotte) . We have friends in the area but none could offer some insight about autism services. I am listing what the current services are and his current school set up as I am looking for something where he could get a mix of good services in the school and some recreation choices in the community as well. He is in sp. ed at school, has a post intensive waiver funding of $9000 annually through the Medicaid which can be used for therapy / respite and some other specific adaptive services that are approved and you have to get them through the approved providers by the County and the eligibility for that is determined annually. There are some community services like Sp. Olympics, a month long summer recreation program offered by the county that takes them to some community places for 2 hours each day with high school kids volunteering and may be some events here and there that are organised by local autism society which he enjoys a lot. His current structure is academics in the sp. ed classroom with 2 other kids (both not on ASD) , Science & Social with all the sp ed kids bunched 2nd thru 5th grade in a another sp. ed room and the other things like recess, gym, art, music with regular peers and some ST and OT during the week. Thats the way its structured and is expected to continue in the next school year as well. I have been researching various forums and there are mixed reviews... If you are living in the area , pls share what kind of services are available. You could email me at smriti08@... Thanks a lot...Smriti
