She said that there was a significant number of children with autism with siblings with the same diagnosis. Now this is on my mind whenever I am playing with my one year old. What is your expirience. How many have NT siblings and how many have Autistic siblings of autistic children?MJ

Guest guest
I have 2 boys same parents... 1 on spectrum 1 not... My 11yo is dx with ASD (pdd-nos), dyslexia, GAD (general anxiaty disorder), +more :-) my 7yo doesn't have any official dx but I am ADD! And I see some add in my younger son he also has had sensory issues for forever but I don't think he is on the spectum!! I think he has SPD. I would just try to enjoy your 1yo! when my boys were little I didn't see the big gap between them in abbilities that I do now... I would also think that as you get services, treatment, therapy for your 3yo that if your 1yo if he is on the spectrum. The experts helping your other child as well as you will start to see it! My boys both had special needs preschool 11yo still has iep. 7yo no iep or special services! my 7yo would never have recived special ed preschool if I hadn't requested he be evaluated. & I only new something was needed due to what I learned with his older brother. Good luck and welcome to the special needs journey:-) I have become part of my states special needs community & have found many familes do have multible children with dx but not always the same dx. I think it comes from us as parents being more aware and all of are children being around so many service providers not just the 1 with the dx.. Jmo! Guest guest
I was just talking to the case worker from the county about my grandson Lucas who is recently diagnosed with aspergers/autism. She was here about my son who has had autism, seizures, and other problems all his life. He also had a cousin with severe autism who has since died..their fathers were brothers. One of my sons who is a software engineer with an MS in math and computer science says he thinks he is on the " spectrum " and my other son who is a gifted musician has serious issues in how he functions especially social phobia, etc. so does my daughter, yet he is brilliant when it comes to music and she is extra creative when it comes to drama.. My husband their father was a gifted in math and was an electrical engineer workaholic who later became an alcoholic as did my oldest son and daughter but they are now both sober. Sadly my husband died. I really think all three of them used alcohol to medicate. I don't know if I am on the spectrum, when I take the test though I score quite high, can see some real similarities in how I take things literally logically not emotionally, how I have this almost obsessive attention to detail... Guess all I am saying is that not everything about autism is bad, as my son Jeff tells me, " Most of the people at MIT have aspergers. " Doesn't sound so bad. Guest guest
Here's our list: --15 year old with Aspergers, speech impediment --13 year old with slight dyslexia, ADD --11 year with dyslexia, speech impediment --apparently (!) neurotypical 8 year old --5 year old with ADHD, severe speech impediment --3 year old with speech problems--- aphasia-- otherwise apparently neurotypical. Looking at our family history, we can see that dyslexia, leaning disabilities and Aspergers abound on both sides. However I think we are the first to pull them all together in one family! It used to bother us immensely, now we just laugh and appreciate our lovely, brilliant, unusual children. It helps to have a big family because social issues are not as much of a problem. It also helped us a lot to realize that there is a fine line between giftedness and autistic spectrum disorders. They frequently accompany one another, and sometimes it's unclear where one leaves off and the other begins. Good luck to you! > I have 2 boys same parents... 1 on spectrum 1 not... > My 11yo is dx with ASD (pdd-nos), dyslexia, GAD (general anxiaty disorder), +more :-) my 7yo doesn't have any official dx but I am ADD!
