Guest guest
, I am curious about unschooling, I will have to look it up. We pretty much did that today after we got no where with " school " I have a packet from a local homeschooling association with networks listed. On top of isolation, my girls aren't typical, of course, so I am worried about being accepted. I pretty much ask my 9 year old a question about the museum we just went to and she says " that's school, I am not doing school " I am at a loss. Thank you for the encouragement. , have you considered unschooling while you're in Hawaii? Would you feel comfortable taking the kids to explore the neighborhood either on walks or public transportation? Are there librariesor other things to check out? If you had wheels you could even take your schoolbooks to the beach. I find hotel rooms in particular to be very tough. I think for your own sanity, I would relax the schooling right now, consider the travel itself to be educational, and make it up later in the year.I wonder if you could use the web to find local homeschooling groups there? It sounds like you're in the city so probably there aren't a lot of families around, but who knows? Good luck! I feel for you! Hello all I am getting a little desparate here. I have 2 aspergirls plus a younger daughter adn we have moved to HI with my husband who is working here. I am homeschooling and my oldest is making me crazy. She is totally non compliant and oppositional. We are in a hotel in a busy city and it's very over stimulating, but also we need to be respectful of guests. " Forcing " her to do school creates yelling and screaming so I feel like my hands are tied. Her choice now is to stay in her room or do school, but she says THATS boring and is fighting me on this. I am totally frustrated and honestly my feelings are hurt which is creating anger. The only thing I can come up with is to ignore her in her room until our " school " day is over. Am I too worried about keeping her academics up? I don't know what to do, it's just me all day with no car and NO friends. Please!!!! Guest guest
Incentive to earn based on amount of work done - money works very well for some but I refrain from that. Outings. Video game time , movie rentals, etc. Sent from my iPhone Hello all I am getting a little desparate here. Guest guest
Mine love to receive coins for good behavior and jobs around the house - I'm thinking of it as an early form of " allowance " and they can cash in for certain rewards when they have enough coins - we're using quarters for my son when he has a great day at school, dimes, nickles and pennies for other things like helping with the trash, feeding the dogs, etc. I'm giving them for " using our words " and not our hands...my three year old wants pennies for using the potty...I;d rather do that than give him candy, lol. If it works, then go for it ;-) > > > Hello all > > I am getting a little desparate here. I have 2 aspergirls plus a younger daughter adn we have moved to HI with my husband who is working here. Guest guest
,Your situation sounds highly stressful. You don't say how old your oldest is...is she going through puberty? Is she getting any outside help, like therapy? If not, is there any way you could get her some? Maybe for you both? She sounds like she know how "to push your buttons" by acting out, knowing you will give in because you're in a hotel and have to keep it down. It would be really good for you both if you could find someone to talk to. As for academics....not so important as getting you To: autism-aspergers Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 3:27 PM Subject: 6 months in HI Hello all I am getting a little desparate here. Guest guest
One suggestion is to take your school work outside. Is there a local park with picnic tables. It's always easier to do math when you're outside. As for academics, I don't know how much you're giving her, or what curriculum you are using. You could lighten up a bit. (i.e. if she's learning the concepts, she doesn't need to do a lot of problems.) You also might give some incentives, such as -- if we get a, b and c done by Thursday, we can take off Friday and spend the day at the beach.
