,

I can totally relate to your situation, my son has gone through very similar circumstances.

I wonder if the powder someone mentioned was Miralax, which is now available over the counter. Our pediatric gastroenterologist prescribed this for my son. He said that it's saline based and increases the amount of water in the GI tract, so it's not chemically addictive. Of course, you should check with your doctors before giving your son Miralax, but I can tell you that it was a huge help to my child. Before Miralax, he would hold his stool for 10-14 days, and become so impacted that I often had to give him saline enemas (this was also based on doctor's recommendation). It was a miserable time for him. He had suffered from constipation, probably due to a poor diet, and became afraid to pass his stool because of the pain. His pediatrician wanted us to administer enough Miralax to make the stool the consistency of chocolate pudding, so that he couldn't really hold it back... and he wanted us to put him on the commode frequently to desensitize

him to the fear. He hasn't become totally BM-trained yet, he still asks for a pull up because he's still afraid to sit on the toilet when he feels the need for a BM, but he is improving and at least now his bowels do move every day, which is much better for his overall health.

I mentioned poor diet---this is because he is very sensitive to food textures and will only eat a small variety of foods... no fruits, very few vegetables. He has extreme sensitivities to gluten & casein, so that complicates it further. I read that several people in this group are using Benefiber... the last time I checked, it wasn't gluten free so that wasn't an option for us, but I'm thinking that I need to check the labels again since it seems to be working for so many people.

Hope you find some relief for him soon... I know how difficult this is and how overwhelmed you must feel sometimes. Nothing is worse than when your child is in pain or discomfort. Take care! Better days are ahead, you're on the right track to finding something that will help!

Hello, my name is . My son is almost 8. He has several Dx's. bi-polar, aspergers, OCD, blah blah blah...but beyond the "labels" his issues right now are overwhelming. He's going to be 8 in August. He's still in pull ups b/c he refuses to poop on the toilet. He's got a lot of sensory issues so reasoning w/ him, rewards, all that means nothing to him. Psych services in our area are minimal at best. He with holds the stool until he can't physically do it anymore. It's a nightmare. We live in WI and we are a half hour away from Children's hospital so I am going to get him into a GI Dr. our peditrician had suggested the constipation clinic but i tried explaining that he's not constipated, he just refuses to allow the stool to pass. I'm at my witts end. And lately his behavior is starting to get difficult

again. His famous line is " THERE'S NOTHING TO DO" I swear I will be hearing that go thru my head till the day I die. I have 3 other kids, some health issues myself and I just am not a walking entertainment center. And as we all know we can't entertain them 100% of the time. He can't completely verbalize what he wants, so that doesn't help. I'm rambling, I'm sorry. It's just been one of those weeks. He started summer school, so that helps. But I've tried everything I know what to do and am at a loss. My husband is very gifted w/ kids, especially special needs kids, but my gosh, he has to work. So....anyways.. I just needed to vent. All that has been rolling around in my head! thank you for listening!

Thanks for your reply! We've been giving Isaiah miralax for a few years now.

He'll ask for when he feels his belly getting hard. One of the times that he was

hospitalized for his behavior, they ended up treating him more for his GI issues

than his behavior. They did an X-ray and found a BOWLING ball size amount of

stool in his GI track. They gave him EVERYTHING, stool softeners, bowel preps,

enemas, you name it, the boy barely pooped. We got him home, doubled up his

miralax and he pooped for days. It was just the hospital setting. It just goes

to show how much he can hold it when he is feeling scared and anxious. I'm going

to take him to a psychologist. Thanks again!
