Guest guest
My newly diagnosed 7 year doesn't really handle returning to school after holiday breaks really well. I've been playing around with the though of possibly home schooling during the longer breaks. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks
Guest guest
My 7 yo son was the exact same last year (1st grade)! It got so bad that he would throw up the night before going back to (public) school. He seemed OK if we had multiple 5-day weeks in a row. But when winter hit we had a ton of snow days (in VA they have limited snow plows, salt, etc. for the roads). It was horrible. We just muddled through it. If you could work in some incentives (if our son doesn't complain about xyz so many days of the week, then he can go to the skate park on the weekend) he may be able to get through the week better. These kids often have to dig deep to muster up the courage to go to school. It got to the point that he was exibiting such bizaar behavior at school (OCD) and anxiety and depression at home ( " I don't want to live anymore " ) that the teacher recommended testing for high-functioning autism. We did get a dx in June of Asperger's (although now I'm starting to think it might be more of PDD-NOS because he is so high-functioning). After wrestling with the idea of sending him back to school (950 kids in the school) I just couldn't do it. We're trying out homeschool this year for second grade. It's working out pretty well (some good days, some bad). Breaks are a great thing now, esp. when he asks if he could get a jump start on math during break! That's pretty cool! Good luck! Guest guest
We have the same problem. I have my kids at home doing online school, but we still had trouble approaching christmas and I anticipate trouble on the other end as well. One thing we have done that worked well is a " transition routine " (when they were in a classroom). I had an art station a music station and " mommy time " station which was some kind of sensory thing, back rub, jumping rope, pull ups, while we talked. Ea. station was 10ish min. (I have 3 girls, so we rotated). It lasted about 1 1/2 all tolled, but I noticed a great improvement on previous transitions. It worked well for us!
