Guest guest
Yes, yes, yes! We are dealing with this right now with my second grader. We have tried all kinds of things like going to bed earlier (he just gets up earlier then), letting him take small " catnaps " for 10-15 minutes and then waking him up, adding physical movement early in the day.....Nothing has seemed to help. Our son's doctor has finally agreed to order a sleep study to look at his quality of sleep at night. We're hoping it's going to show us something. Guest guest
Our sleep study and seizure monitoring sleep study were both negative. Has to be him shutting down. ??? By the way my son " slept " thru the 2ND grade too, and no meds then. Kim CJ 10.5 yo, AS/BP/ADD Seroquel, Risperdal
Guest guest
Hello, my son is 4 and autistic and my daughter is about to be 6. She's in kindergarten and my son pre-k. He's in private autism school and she's in public school. My son Dorian was diagnosed 2 years ago, but my daughter was fine or so we thought. It's only been 3 weeks since school has started and she's sleeping in class, making weird noises, and rocking in her chair. She had her OT eval yesterday and was diagnosed with Severe sensory integration disorder. She's falling to sleep every morning. Well we had to implement in our IEP a rule that says every 15 minutes she gets up and walks around! alena Sleeping in classTo: AutismBehaviorProblems > Anyone else have a child that cannot wake up very well in the > mornings, and sleeps thru class until lunch ? Guest guest
Jake did this all through pk last year. The school insisted it was all sorts of things ... behavioral issues ... his diet ... anything but them. I begged them to consider changing his curiculum, the structure of his day, his seating arrangement ... just try SOMETHING rather than just blaming me or Jake. I think it was the same thing you think about your son - he was shutting down. Jake's easily frustrated when bored or overstimulated and just falls asleep to go away. Not much has changed, though ... school is suggestive-selling meds but I say no; I'm waiting on our outside eval to decide what the next step is. > > Anyone else have a child that cannot wake up very well in the > mornings, and sleeps thru class until lunch ? Guest guest
Have you tried having his OT do some awakening activities, movement? My oldest is a slug unless he does some movement, and now that he is in Middle school they don't do any recess so he has the same problems of sleeping cropping up. If you haven't started one a sleep diary is great as well. H MD
Guest guest
I did not see your original post so I might be adding my 2 sense without all the details. I have a student in my class that falls asleep or gets very sleepy during class lessons. I have found that having him sit on a ball has helped extensively. It's one of those large bouncy balls. It keeps his body upright and helps keep him focused and awake. I also permit walks throughout the day to help awaken his senses. :-)le Building a website is a piece of cake. Yahoo! Guest guest
He no longer has OT. I could no longer afford private services and the PUBLIC school feels he does not need OT services. Apparently the school OTs do not deal with " sensory " issues. UGH !! In fifth grade they only have PE 2x a week, and last year at his old school it was daily. Sometimes last year at his old school they would let him walk laps in the gym and that helped a little bit. However, at the new PUBLIC school I'm having to fight for appropriate accomdations. UGH !! Thanks for the advice though. Kim CJ 10.5 yo, AS/ADD/BP ??, Seroquel, 5TH grade Georgia
Guest guest
We have therapy balls here at the house, but the school does not " get it. " Unfortunately his teachers do not " see " his disabilities, and seem to think he is only being a disobediant kid. I'm trying to change their outlooks !!! Not easy. Want to come to GA and teach my son ??? Ha!! Ha!! Maybe we could try the therapy ball for homework, and see if that helps there, another sore spot for my son.?? Worth as shot I suppose. Thanks for the advice. Kim CJ 10.5 yo, AS/ADD/BP ?? Seroquel, 5Th grade PUBLIC school
Guest guest
Kim, I am a psychologist from MIchigan who specializes in autism spectrum disorders. I have two documents you might be interested in. One is a four page diagram about stress, anxiety, meltdowns and shutdowns in ASD, and the other is a research article about stress and shutdowns. I will put both documents in the " files " section to the left here. Let me know if you have any questions. Guest guest
Kim, Sorry, I see I cannot put documents into " files " section.
