Lois, that's a new one on me. Keep me up to date on JJ.

Are you familiar with a woman from India named Soma? Her autistic son doesn't have verbal language, but he has written a couple of books. Her method of working with autistic children is Rapid Prompting Method (RPM). She has a clinic in Austin, Texas, and I have managed two appointments with her for Karac and me in March. I am so excited. Today I watched two DVD's of her work with autistic children, and she is awesome! She doesn't have an age limit; she has worked with them from 2 to 50. On the DVD I saw her work with a young girl who was very aggressive, slapping her, pulling her hair, and trying to bite her. She worked right through it; by the fourth day the girl was calm and compliant.

It is so encouraging to me that here is someone who doesn't just want to work with those from 3 to 5 and isn't afraid of the aggressive ones. Pat K

Ok,you guys are hurting my feelings.I've been posting about RPM for

the since august 06. We live in S.California and have been to camp

3times,I organized a local workshop here,I'm also a resource member

here in C.A. and we're returning next week to Austin for Level I

training for me and a 4th camp for my son.

Please go to Halo-soma.org .you will see video clips of Soma working

1:1 with students of various ages and abilities and if you order her

Seminar DVD (A presentation at ASA San Diego) you will see several

clips of her working with clients and explaining how rpm and the brain

work.Soma has been refining RPM for over a decade beginning with her

own son Tito Mukhopadhyay who has a new book being released " How can I

talk if my lips don't move " you can get it on amazon.com.Well,Soma has

worked with children to adults though she now requires they be at

least 7yrs old (used to be 5yrs old) for attending camp. However you

can start at home doing RPM.It is possible and surprisingly very

simple..pen and paper required. You dont need to hire anyone to start

this for you.You will feel empowered by being able to do this

yourself. Over this past year I've really incorporated it into our

daily lives.

Soma has worked with clients with various diagnosis not just

autism. And yes,she will not turn away someone who is aggressive. When I

saw the clip of the girl you're referring to on her dvd,I knew that

she could deal with my son. Let me stress to you that you DO NOT have

to go to Austin for camp. There are many things you can get started on

at home.It is something that will open many doors for you and your child.

Stacey, I thought you were the one who told me about RPM, and I went immediately to the website and that is where I ordered the DVD's and filled out an application and managed to get two days in March with Soma. Didn't I respond back to you at the time?

I am very excited about her method; I just don't know if I have enough energy, but I'm going to work at it. I feel so fortunate to live only a few hours from Austin. I can be there and back in a day. That's ok.Soma doesn't use a computer or AC device unless the client uses one

independently. There are various techniques she uses in RPM for communication

such as a letter board or the student can point or pick up their answer, say it

or write it,she has adapted several ways for a student to respond based on their

abilities. My son has always struggled with fine motor so isolating one finger to

point or type let alone handwrite has been a challenge so she hands him a pencil

to point to each letter which he does independently.Soma gives no physical

support. If you go to HALO-Soma.org,and look at the video clips of kids working

for the 1st time with Soma using choices you'll see what I mean.
