How exciting. I am now going to do EXACTLY what you did. Just saw your amazing

video. I wrote down all the written instructions that you had on the bottom of

the video.

About how long ..from the first day...to when you harvest the sprouts?

thanks much

Forgot to ask this question. Does one have to use organic soil? I don't know

where to get this. Can I use regular potting soil?

Thanks much, Melody

No Miracle grow, and no poo in my soil. I just compost and amend clay soil

until it is rich. I make a compost " tea " in my Vitamix with veggie scraps and

seaweed-it will enrich pretty much any kind of dirt. Purchased soil would be

fine for this, though. I am just not a fan of purchased, since most contains

chicken poo-not something I want in my food!

Melody, I am usually nibbling by day 3 (after planting, not soaking) and getting

a full harvest by day 4 or 5. They wilt QUICKLY once you have taken the

pressure plate off-they only need about one day without the plate to be ready.

I am hooked on them-so bright and green and yummy! As a side note, PLEASE be

sure to use organic black oil sunflower seeds (also fun to grow the whole flower

to harvest the seeds-I do that in the summertime) Don't use seed sold for

birds, as it is usually treated with yucky stuff.

Sure you can, Melody-I am just an organic freak and tend to throw the word

around-if you are comfortable with non organic, it should be fine. I do know of

instances where tender seeds don't grow so well in it, which should be a

testament to NOT using non organic, but it might be just fine. I do know you

can buy organic soil at Walmart for a couple of bucks a bag-bit more expensive

than regular, but worth it to my mind. Pretty sure the organic still contains

poo, but it is at least available.

Just so you guys know - there is nothing further from organic soil than Miracle

Grow " potting soil " . It is junky soil mix with chemical fertilizers mixed in.

Yuck!

Thanks so much. I shall try and get some organic black sunflower seeds. What

happens if I buy a regular bag of sunflower seeds in my health store and it's

not organic? Or I go to the supermarket and buy (with hulls on, right??)

regular sunflower seeds.

Would they still sprout like you made them sprout?

Here's another one of my questions. When you harvest your sprouts (after 4 or

five days) and you cut them from the soil, do they grow more?, if so, how many

times more, and then WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE SOIL? Can you re-use this soil?

Or once the 5 days (or more harvesting) time is up, do you throw the soil away?

See, not so bad a question.

lol

n.

They sell a 50 lb bag of soil for $3.00. Holy cow.

I have NEVER used soil for anything, oh, wait, I'm a liar, outside during the

summer, I use it for my flowers. I buy potting soil from the ninety nine cents

store.

can I use that to sprout sunflower seeds and this is what I really need to know?

When you have finished sprouting, do you re-use the same batch of soil, I know

you gardners would simply throw the soil in your gardens, but I don't have

gardens, so I'm imagining what I would be doing after I harvest my first crop of

sunflower sprouts. They look amazing in that video, don't they?

As long as they are raw, unroasted or treated, they should sprout, but I would

search for the black oil seed. I grow the sunflowers in the summer and harvest

the seeds, but they are readily available at most health food stores or places

like Whole Foods.

Perfectly reasonable question! I do not reuse my soil, but add it to my compost

bin. The birds LOVE to nibble the roots that are left in the soil. There is

always a good flock of birds around my compost heap, so I make sure they have

goodies to make it worth their while, lol. You CAN reuse the soil if you

" solarize " the soil by letting it bake in the sun to kill the remaining roots. I

do this sometimes in my solar oven by just putting the soil in the cookpot and

letting the sun do the work. The only thing you need to watch for is your soil

getting moldy. You can also shake out the root mass and save the remaining

soil. You only need a tiny bit of soil though-just enough to cover the bottom

of a pie dish. Not sure you can tell from the video, but I used two little

apple shaped dishes-they are my favorites because I get just the right amount of

sprouts to last me a few days. I plant a new " crop " every day so I have a

constant harvest of them.

Hi.

I just read n's post on soil and how some nasty stuff turns up in the soil.

She mentioned cow manure.

I thought manure was GOOD!!!

It's not good??
