Hi,

My 4 1/2 year old son is the same way. People don't believe me when I say that needs an adult glued to him to control his constant movement and constantly touching/breaking things. You can't leave him for a second. Unfortunately, with him, he will not sit for anything, tv, books, etc... Nothing, he is in constant uncontrollable motion for most of the day. He has been this way forever. Daycare kicked him out and I had to stop working when he was almost 3 because the daycare could not keep him still or with the group. He isn't bad on purpose. I really think he can't control himself. He also laughs like a drunk as he is running around doing these things. He also has that drunk look in his eyes.

Anyway, finally a couple of months ago, I decided to try Ritalin. His teacher saw an immediate improvement in his ability to sit and work with the group. The bad thing for me is that it only lasts about 3 or 4 hours and he is coming off it in the afternoons with me and he is worse than ever. I know it is helping him learn and focus at school but afternoons are driving me crazy.

sorry, I can't help more,

Hi Michele,

I posted last night re: DAYTRANA the patch for ADHD. It has been much

better for my son than any of the other oral meds. It is the same type

of medicine as Ritalin...except it is delivered via a transdermal

patch. It starts working for my son after about 30 min to an hour of

having it on....and it can stay on for up to 9 hours and when you take

it off it takes about 1-2 hours for the meds to get out of their

system. The great thing is....you can also use it only for partial

days for shorter times if that is all they need it for. The 'rebound'

effects have also been 1000% better than the orally delivered meds, at

least for us.

I know several people don't know about this patch, even though it has

been out for quite some time. I guess because it is only marketed to

the ADHD crowd. I'm sure someone else may be able to clue you into any

problems they ran into with it, as no one solution is good for or works

for everyone. Thankfully, we are one that it helped.

My oldest daughter has had alot of OT, but she has the opposite problem

from Emma. She is so oversensitive to touch and sound that her fine

motor skills are extremely delayed from so much tactile defensiveness.

Emma seems to need ALOT of input (hence the jumping and running, etc)

I should probably try some deep pressure, some brushing, etc to see if

that seems to help at all. I am so frightened of Ritalin. I think

it's just the stereotype, you know? I was a first grade teacher for 5

years and there were kids who REALLY did NEED their Ritalin and felt so

much better when they had it. They were helped tremendously by it. So

why am I so frightened to try something like that???? Actually, I

think at this point I would try anything. Today she had dental surgery

(she needed a crown and 3 fillings... she used to gag and vomit when I

brushed her teeth so they were quite neglected, now it's no longer a

problem but we have to repair the damage) She had general anesthesia,

and before they took her back they gave her an oral dose of Verced (I'm

sure I spelled that wrong, but it's a sedative) and OH MY GOSH I just

said PLEASE can I have some of this to take home??? LOL! It was SO

AWESOME how it calmed her down. Of course I would never want her to

have something that sedating during the day because it made her sleepy,

but it was pretty nice to have her so relaxed and quiet!!!!

Hi Michele,

There are other meds available that spread the effect over longer periods of time...tell the dr. what's going on, as perhaps one of the other meds would be a better fit.

Good luck!

That drunk look is often yeast issues.

Hi , From what you've said about your son, it sounds like a

candida yeast overgrowth. If you check this out on the net, it also

causes the symptoms of intoxication. I had to put my grandson on

diflucan and take him off carbohydrates and sweets which feed the

yeast. He is doing much, much better now.
