Hi sarah,

I had the pulmonary function test done last month. The also do a artery

Blood on the wrist first. Then they put you in a chasmber and close the door

and do three different kind of breathing test. It is not bad at all.

From what I understand they don't get good reliable readings on kids younger than 5 so it is pretty much useless. Hope all goes well. Is this the full spirometry in the "phone booth" or just pft's in the doctors office? Madeline http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Lungs_on_Vacation/

Hi :

His lungs probably needed to develop to a certain point before the test can be reliable.

I wasn't aware of the difficulty in getting a pediatric PFT. They are doing the full test @ 2pm today at the hosp. I say finally because trying to get info for his asthma has been like pulling teeth. I know there is more to treating him than just shoving albuterol at it when he starts wheezing, but I guess I'm not asking the the right questions. It should be possible to to a Peak flow meter on children that young but they haven't shown me or told me how to do it. Very frustrated. He couldn't get dental work done in May because of the asthma. I didn't realize they would do a blood pull too, crap, that in itself will set off an attack with him (pounding head on desk in frustration).

Here, the recommendation is that you don't attempt to do peak flow readings with kids under 5, as they will get confused between that, where they have to blow out, and taking their inhalers where they are breathing in. Obviously, being able to take an inhaler is the more important of the two!

Thank you, he's been seeing a pulmonologist since last year was dx'd the year

before that and it takes a group on Yahoo to tell me what I need to know to deal

with this. Tell me again why I am paying doctors?

I must have the mental capacity of a 5 year old, then -

I never do the tests right at checkups.

When I was checked last year for COPD, they did not draw arterial blood on me. This may be a doctor's order, but the tech that did my testing said not one word about a blood draw and neither did my dr. Say prayers for me please everyone. My asthma is close to going off. I went to the dr this morning and I am a bit tight but not too bad yet. I do have a sinus infection and ragweed is in bloom here.Take care all,From: sarah martin
