Oh, thank you for the kind words. I just came home from breakfast (where of

course I bring a tub of my sprouts and this time the sprouts looked and tasted a

bit different. I had made a radish, broccoli fenugreek mixture but I had put

MORE of the broccoli in it. It grows a bit different, more flowery I would

guess, but when I put the sprouts on my sandwich, everyone looks and goes

ooooohhhh, and I then told them what my dentist had said about how my eating

this kind of diet is contributing to my healthy teeth and gums (and who on earth

doesn't want that?)

But we got to talking and there was a 79 year old HEALTHY gentleman there who

said " I have to enjoy what I eat, I can't live on plants, I need meat and

potatoes " . I then said " then of course you should eat your meat and potatoes " .

We laugh every morning. And this morning was no exception. We got to talking

about the first cooking mistakes we all made. When it was my turn, I had them

rolling that they had to blow their noses they laughed so hard.

When I was 24 and in my own apartment, and I had a boyfriend, we decided to

roast a chicken. I had NEVER done this before but I watched my mother as she did

her chicken.

So here was Melody holding the whole chicken under the kitchen faucet, turning

it upside down to let the water flow out, and then I imitated my mother, she

said " Always salt the chicken before cooking and run the water over the bird, it

takes all the extra stuff off of the chicken and you are left with a nice clean

bird.

So that's what I did. I rubbed salt over the chicken, I poured salt INSIDE the

chicken, I rinsed the chicken, I drained the water out of inside the chicken. I

then poured a whole bottle of wishbone italian salad dressing all over the

chicken as it sat in the baking dish. I heated up the oven, put the chicken in,

and set the timer for about 1 hour.

Well, 30 minutes later my boyfriend comes running in announcing " THE CHICKEN IS

ON FIRE " . I said " how on earth can a chicken be on fire? "

I looked through the glass walls of my oven and sure enough, my chicken had

flames coming out of it. We opened the door, had pot holders, grabbed the whole

thing and dumped it in the sink FLAMES AND ALL.

I ran the water and then I noticed where the fire was coming out of INSIDE THE

CHICKEN.

THERE WAS A PAPER BAG ON FIRE ,and I said " what the heck is a paper bag doing

inside the chicken " .

I immediately phoned my mother and when she stopped laughing and choking she

said: ' " Don't you know what is inside a chicken when you buy it? I said " how

on earth would I know what is inside a chicken, there was no sign attached to

this bird saying " LOOK INSIDE, THERE'S A PAPER BAG "

After trying to stop herself from laughing so hard she told me 'They put the

neck and the giblets and the gizzards inside the chicken "

I then said " Why on earth would they do that " ????.

She couldn't stop laughing so I said " goodbye " and threw out the chicken.

Well....when I told this to the other patrons at the cafe, they all fell off the

chairs.

We all shared funny stories but they said I should be on television.

This really happened and I still maintain " how on earth am I supposed to know

that they put a paper bag INSIDE a chicken "

lol

I second that! Your videos were one of the first items I discovered on this

list and I was amazed by your creative solutions and inspired by your

enthusiasm. Personal stories, even about things " non-sprout-related " (although

the dentist story actually was related to sprouts and healthy living!) let us

get to know each other better. Keep them coming!

Because of the personalities that I've already witnessed via the message board,

I'm not as afraid to try sprouting on a more serious basis because I know I have

nice, friendly - and funny! - people to ask when things don't go so well.

OMG! I might have to think about it before I read your posts while I'm at

work! Thank you though, I needed a laugh today.

You aren't the ONLY person who's been clueless the first time about the " pieces

and parts " being in bag inSIDE the chicken! I've heard many stories about this

type of mishap. You are, however, the very first person I've ever heard of

having their chicken burst into flames!

I'll have to tell your story to the gal at my nail place who was telling about

talking her husband through putting a chicken in the oven to roast, only to find

out after he'd started it that he didn't know about the giblets either. When

she told him that he had to take those out, he told her NO WAY was he sticking

his hand inside that chicken and taking anything out of it. She had to do it

when she got home!

And there's the one about when Melody decided to make her FIRST batch of

spaghetti. I was 24 years old. I bought a box of Ronzoni Spaghetti, read the

directions and the directions said " place spaghetti in boiling water and boil

for 14 minutes or until AL DENTE. I had no idea what AL DENTE was but I was

going to follow the directions.

I placed the spaghetti in the boiling water. NEVER TOOK IT OUT OF THE BOX

THOUGH. IT DIDN'T SAY TO TAKE IT OUT OF THE BOX FIRST!!!

And EW wonders what I cooked before I came on these boards.

Oh, I'm an expert all right. I married a man who, when we first got married,

told me " I like spaghetti with undiluted s Tomato Soup " . I said: " you

like WHAT?? " He said " that's right, just open a can of s Tomato soup

and pour it right on the cooked spaghetti " . Now who was I to tell this man what

he liked or did not like. This is how he was raised.

One time I made home made sauce (it was to die for), and I served it to him. I

wanted him to get a taste of REAL italian sauce. What did Alan say? " I like it

the other way better "

It took me a long time, but he finally came around. I haven't used the tomato

soup in a long time. Now he likes my sauce.

Sigh!!!

What really amazes me, is that mother's don't teach their children to cook

anymore. My Mother was not a good cook, so I learned how by not doing what she

did. My wife learned by cooking right alongside of her mother. My children

learned the same way. When I'm talking about sprouting or nutrition, I am

surprised the number of women who think cooking is opening a can or defrosting

something.

Haven't bought canned soup in YEARS. I'm afraid of what is leeching out of the

cans. Any cans for that matter. I think the FDA wants to kill us all. And how

is the thing going with Monsanto not wanting us to buy seeds any more. Did they

I think it's really sad that so many young people have no idea how to cook a

healthy meal. I'm still in shock that you can buy frozen pancakes and waffles.

Seriously? HOW hard is it to make PANCAKES????

I also grew up thinking Minute Rice was REAL rice. Imagine my amazement when I

finally discovered real rice and the fact that rice can smell almost as

wonderful as fresh baked bread (basmati rice is to die for).

Let's don't even talk about cutting up a whole chicken - or what certain

vegetables even are. I've mentioned kolrabi or turnips and people have never

heard of them or seem surprised that someone would ever want to eat a turnip,

let alone know how to cook with them.

Food is basic - we all have to have it. For so many people not to know how to

grow and cook real food is just heartbreaking to me. If worse came to worse and

we were forced to grow our own, those types of people would not be long for this

world.

What doesn't have it these days. :( I do not understand why it has to go

into everything. One of my goals is to learn how to make " real tomato soup "

from my own, home-grown tomatoes.

(changed my ID to new_sprouter btw - still " the froglady " though)

What bill was that? Why wouldn't they want us to buy seeds anymore? I

thought that their whole deal was to force us to buy seeds by forcing out

heirloom plants so that you can't save seed? Or by developing " self-limiting "

plants that don't produce viable seed at all so that you have to buy from them?

What did I miss?

It is very sad that people don't cook, and that many young kids have no clue

what veggies even are!   My teen daughter often has sleepovers at our house, and

I do ALL of the cooking for the weekend.  I had put out a tray of veggies and

dip, and one young lady picked up a baby carrot and asked me what it was!!!   My

daughter and I are both vegetarian, and I grow ALL of our fruits and veggies, so

I took this girl out into the gardens to show her the growing goodies.  She was

SHOCKED that things grew in the ground!!!  She ended up gobbling up so many

veggies that weekend that she almost made herself sick, but she LOVED them-kept

saying she had never had anything so tasty!!  She is now a regular in our

household, and still delights in the veggies.  I have taught her how to sprout,

but her mother won't allow her to grow " rabbit food " at home-which to me is

BEYOND shocking, since I gave the young lady a sprouter and seeds, so it wasn't

even costing

them anything!  I have taught many a young lady to cook over the years, and

given each of them some type of kitchen gadget to take home, but many of their

parents won't allow them to cook-shocking.  I had my daughter cooking with me

from the time she was old enough to stand on a stool next to me, and at 16, she

is as accomplished as a cook than most adults I know.  Truly sad, indeed, when

someone has no clue what a veggie is or where it comes from, and is not allowed

to grow them when they do discover it!

Don't be so sure it won't in the long run!  I am FAR from being a doomsdayer,

but I recognize that crops that are tainted by GMO ARE going to eventually

effect the crops that are not.  I am an organic gardener-my neighbors who

garden are not.  I can already see problems in my garden caused by cross

pollination, and it is only a matter of years before all of the organic gardens

WILL be effected by it.  It is a topic worth following, whether you believe in

the consequences or not, it will effect us all in the long run.

I have an opinion as to why those moms don't want their daughters to cook. They

don't want the kitchen to get dirty. I really think this is the case. I know

MANY people who feel like this. They don't want the stove dirty WHATSOEVER so

they always do take-out.

I agree, Melody!  What frustrates me is that the people I am talking about have

a much nicer kitchen than I do!!!  And it never gets used!  High tech

regular in our household, and still delights in the veggies.  I have taught her

how to sprout, but her mother won't allow her to grow " rabbit food " at

home-which to me is BEYOND shocking, since I gave the young lady a sprouter and

seeds, so it wasn't even costing

them anything!

Someone once asked me 'What do you mean you don't have a dishwasher or a

disposal?? YOU WASH YOUR DISHES BY HAND AND YOU THROW OUT YOUR FOOD IN A GARBAGE

PAIL??? "

She actually asked me this.

God forbid they ever learn I grow sprouts in my kitchen.

I agree, Melody!  What frustrates me is that the people I am talking about have

a much nicer kitchen than I do!!!  And it never gets used!  High tech

appliances that I would kill for, and all of it never touched.  Uhgggggggggg!

It is very sad that people don't cook, and that many young kids have no clue

what veggies even are!   My teen daughter often has sleepovers at our house,

and I do ALL of the cooking for the weekend.  I had put out a tray of veggies

and dip, and one young lady picked up a baby carrot and asked me what it

was!!!   My daughter and I are both vegetarian, and I grow ALL of our fruits

and veggies, so I took this girl out into the gardens to show her the growing

goodies.  She was SHOCKED that things grew in the ground!!!  She ended up

gobbling up so many veggies that weekend that she almost made herself sick, but

Hi ,

You reminded me...my Dad always had a garden and my Mom always canned whatever

we didn't eat fresh. She would make tomato soup by opening a jar of her

home-canned tomatoes (and NOT put through a sieve, thank you very much!) and

adding a pinch of baking soda as well as some milk. This was a huge favorite in

our house, and she told me that the last meal my Dad requested before he died

was a bowl of her tomato soup.

Thanks for the memory!

Peggy

ps...I will look and see if I have her recipe for the canned tomatoes. She did

make the very best tomato juice in the world, also. It was thick and we used it

to make sloppy joes. Tasted just like Manwich tastes. She always had so many

compliments on it - should have taken the recipe to the patent office, huh?

What doesn't have it these days. :( I do not understand why it has to go

into everything. One of my goals is to learn how to make " real tomato soup "

from my own, home-grown tomatoes.

(changed my ID to new_sprouter btw - still " the froglady " though)

married, told me " I like spaghetti with undiluted s Tomato Soup " . I

said: " you like WHAT?? " He said " that's right, just open a can of s

Tomato soup and pour it right on the cooked spaghetti " . Now who was I to tell

this man what he liked or did not like. This is how he was raised.

Oh my, can you be sure you have your camcorder going when they do? That ought

to make a great video!

I have stopped using my dishwasher as much but there are days when I make so

much of a mess that I go ahead and use it. It's either that or the dishes will

be stacked in the sink and then it will be hard to care for my sprouts. ;-)

I have also started a bokashi bucket and I got a composting crock to sit next to

the sink to put all my " trimmings " in. It takes awhile to get used to putting

them there instead of down the disposal or in the trash can.

I just made a great supper for myself. I'm going to call it " Refrigerator

Ragout " because I used all the veggies in my fridge that I thought might go

together: onion, zucchini, mushrooms, eggplant, spinach and the last of my

alfalfa sprouts. Boiled some butternut squash and had the " ragout " over it.

Yummy.

Wish me luck, I got my new Easy Sprouts and my wheatgrass supplies yesterday and

I have two different sprouting mixes going and enough wheat sprouting to start

my first 5x5 of wheatgrass. I'm going to see how the first batch goes before I

start any more. I also need to figure out when to get a juicer. I'm leaning

towards the Healthy Juicer to begin with.
