Guest guest
, Thanks!!!!!! I never thought of that being covered by insurance!!! WOW....I wonder what the doctor has to write on the script? Guest guest
Hi Shanna, I wish I could take credit for the idea--it was another mom that posts here. I definitely hope you have better luck than I have so far. (I am going to contact our insurance company to see if they'll cover it if I provide lab tests showing the need.) Our doctor simply wrote VSL#3, 60 capsules (which, for Lily, would provide a one month supply since she takes two per day.) I wish you the best and hope you're able to get them covered! : ) > > > > > > > > > > Hi there, > > > > > Can you guys recommend a good probiotic for my daughter to > take > > > our > > > > DAN said culturall ,I was wondering if anybody liked it in > > > particullar. > > > > > she has no good bacteria in her gut according to the stool > test. > > > > > thanks > > > > > marjan > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ______________________________________________________________________ > > > _ > > > > _____________ > > > > > Never miss a thing. Guest guest
Hi, I thought probiotics made us stop losing weight? I checked the website of the doc, and it talked about enzymes, but not probiotics. I have now lost too much weight, and was considering taking them, but I don't know if it will help me at all? I am pretty desperate to find an answer. I fall asleep for hours, and my family cannot get a coherent answer out of me during that time. I have no energy either. I am eating without much problems. No nausea or vomiting. My forearms are completely scarred permenately from the red bruising, and if anything just barely brushes against them the either bruise red, or bleed. No doctor has any idea what's going on. So far the list is Rheumatologist, endocrinologist, dermatologist, regular physician, pain management I think that completes the list of docs staring at me without any idea. I have been wearing socks on my arms for 8 months now. This started 3 months after the DS. It is so profound that people stop me and say how awful it must be, and how sorry they are, and others just act like I have an awful disease, and back away. If anyone has any profound wisdom please let me know. Thanks, Tina To: DS_Friends_Keshishian Sent: Wed, October 21, 2009 4:09:27 PMSubject: probiotics Hi to all, I started taking a generic probiotic about a month ago. In the first three weeks since starting it, one after each meal or before each meal, whatever, I was losing weight like crazy, 3.5, 3.5, and then 2.5 pounds, but I was pooping an awful lot, maybe too much. That is 9.5 pounds in 3 weeks. So the fourth week I was only taking one probiotic a day, some days I took two, and did not poop as much, and only lost 1/2 pound. I did not notice where the probiotic helped my gut, just lost a lot of weight, but I do eat carbs on occasion. Someone told me I need to get rid of the bad bacteria first before taking a probiotic. Nevertheless, lost 10 pounds in 4 weeks so with that I am happy. I am now back to taking 2 probiotics a day and limit my carbs.......I hope. Guest guest
Tina Enzymes make you absorb more of what you eat and If you are losing/lost too much weight that is the FIRST line of defense...next step would be a re-adjustment or reversal of the DS. You need to be in Dr. K's office being evaluated. It sounds like you are seriously deficient in something. Make an appointment...now. You may need aggressive nutritional treatment. Patients have DIED because they waited too long. Please take me seriously. Hugs Jo > > Hi, > > I thought probiotics made us stop losing weight? Guest guest
Well I hit paydirt. Check this out Tina. On the DS site the a lot of people swear by Primal Defense Ultra Probiotics Supplement May Help After Gastric Bypass Surgery FRIDAY, July 17 (HealthDay News) -- Taking a probiotics supplement after gastric bypass surgery helps patients lose weight faster and avoid vitamin B deficiency, a new study finds. Probiotics are the " good " bacteria found in yogurt and in dietary supplements that aid digestion. The Stanford University School of Medicine study included 44 patients who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and were randomly assigned to either a probiotics group or a control group. Both groups received the same bariatric medical care and nutritional counseling and both were allowed to consume yogurt, a natural source of probiotics. Patients in the probiotics group also took one pill per day of a probiotics supplement. After three months, the probiotics group had a 47.6% weight loss, compared with 38.5% in the control group. Patients in the probiotics group also had higher levels of vitamin B-12 three months after surgery than those in the control group -- 1,214 picograms per milliliter as opposed to 811 picograms per milliliter, a significant difference since B-12 deficiency is common after gastric bypass surgery. The study appears in the July issue of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery. > > > > Hi, > > > > I thought probiotics made us stop losing weight? Guest guest
I don't want to lose more weight, but gain some. Will it still work in my favor? I just a few weeks got over bronchitis, and had 2 shots of antibiotics. Since then a yeast inf, and thrush in my mouth. These are things I have rarely dealt with. It made me start thinking about the probiotics. To: DS_Friends_Keshishian Sent: Wed, October 21, 2009 10:42:27 PMSubject: Re: probiotics Well I hit paydirt. Check this out Tina. Guest guest
, I bought probiotics from Spring Valley, multi-Enzyme 1 billion active cultures. The directions say to take one with each meal, before or after meal, so that is 3 a day. I did that for 3 weeks and was pooping like crazy and lost 9.5 pounds in 3 weeks, which is quite a lot for me, but the pooping was unreal so I cut down to 1 or 2 a day, and my pooping lessened, but only lost 1/2 pound this past week, so I am back to taking 3 a day. Since I started iron about 3 weeks ago, i am finally constipated so may be the 3 a day probiotics might not be so bad. Only time will tell. Good luck.to you. I think each person has to find their own "normal".

Guest guest
The waters are going to get a bit muddy here. I am going to say...NOBODY on this list is a DS surgeon...Dr. K is the one with a medical degree and lots of experience. So follow his advice to the tee. But I don't. I modify his advice...for " me " . I try to " catch it " BEFORE I'm in trouble. I think every DS patient should be on probiotics for a couple weeks right after surgery. For those first few weeks after being dosed with antibiotics. I know several folks that when they finally listened to me the bowel problems they were complaining about settled down. After that...I think it needs to be on a case by case basis. Like I said previously...I only take probiotics here and there..not often...but give me a prescription of antibiotic and I'm going to take a probiotic right along with it. I am considering adding it this Fall and winter...just because there has been so much buzz about it, especially connected to the flu. I don't think we should lean on probiotics as an excuse to eat all those foods that cause us problems. But I think if we are having problems we should give it a try and see if it settles down the ol' plumbing and allows us little things like being able to stay in the same bed as our spouse! lol. I think Dr. K and the whole wls community are " learning " as we go along. I think sometimes doctors wait until a " study " is done...in the mean time the patients is having to deal with the problem. Don't get me wrong...Doctors can't just be willy-nilly in their medical advice. But " I " can choose to give something a try that doesn't seem to have any huge medical problem connected to it and even normies can take it. But...at under a year...I do think there is a point to letting your system adjust...and allowing the patient " learn " what is good and bad for their new system. Not making the new plumbing " dependant " on something like a probiotic to function. I also think we should use things like Imodium sparingly for many of the same reasons. American BOWELS functions ...well...like CRAP due to American diet. That is also one of the reasons that probiotics are being talked about so much. They do not make probiotics for WLS patients...and check it out...there are tons of it on the market. Our intestinal health is being talked about alot as being a key component to our overall general health. Everything from the flu to arthritis. ...thanks for sharing what Dr. K told you. It may help some folks decide what they should do. Waters muddy enough for you? Hugs JO > > Hello everyone, , and Jo, > Regarding probiotics > > I am fairly newly postop, 6 months. I had started a course of probiotics, just a generic one, and seemed to be losing weight a bit faster. Then I asked Dr. K for a round of Flagyl and mentioned I take probiotics. He said I was too early out for probiotics and for Flagyl, need time for my new tummy to adjust. He said no probiotics. In reading the posts here and on OH, I see a lot of people take probiotics as a matter of routine even those with a " regular " tummy. Now that it is mentioned it is good for things such as the flu, I wonder wouldn't it be in my best interest to take a probiotic? > >
