Guest guest
Hi, Stevie, My dad has had a flu shot every year, and he has not gotten the flu. We probably will not get one this year. I think it is impossible to get dad out of the house, unless he rebounds. I did read an article somewhere by some doctor that said getting the flu shot greatly increases your risk of getting Alzheimers. I have no idea if this doctor is a reputable source or not, but it sure makes me think about getting a flu shot. I think I rather take my chances with the flu, in case he is correct. Guest guest
Thank you Piper, There are so many questions about what we did " before " we even knew anything about LBD. His doctor gave him a shot every year at his check up but now it is hard to even get him to go to the doctor. He doesn't want one this year so I will grant his wish. Thank you for helping. Guest guest
isn't there something about the flu shot being a live vaccine? Someone mentioned that to me, because I had pointed out that none of his doctors said to get him a flu shot. Since illnesses/infections seem to make them worse - she thought that it being a live vaccine would be harder on him. cindy --- ppark4915@... wrote: > Hi, Stevie, > > My dad has had a flu shot every year, and he has not > gotten the flu. Guest guest
Hello Gerry, Thank you for sharing that. I used to make an " outing " about going to the doctor's and then to lunch and then to the Harbor but now my Uncle refuses to go anywhere because we can't take him to restaurants (his favourite thing)! because of his choking episodes. He refuses to go anywhere that he can't " walk in " because he hates to use his wheelchair and doesn't want to be seen in it at the Harbor. It has posed quite a dilemma for " decision making " and leaves me frustrated at home most of the time because of his stubbornness (We used to go out every day...now we rarely go out). I have received " strength " from this message board and made some decisions not only for his good, but for mine. As Caregivers, I'm sure you all know what I mean? In the past few days I have talked to three of his doctor's and they are recommending Hospice to come out and help me with his care (He does not want to go to a NH...it is in his Will). They will " assess " him for the next six months and then if necessary, reassess him for another six months and help me to make decisions that are good for both him and me. Thank you again for your input! Peace to you....Stevie * * * * * * * * * * * My Dad yearly received his flu shot without any side ffects. Year before last, we were able to put him in the car and the office nurse came out to immunize him. Last year, if you recall, there was a shortage of the vaccine. We had to travel about 20 miles to a clinic set up for the elderly in a school By some miracle, I was able to get Dad out of the car and into the clinic without difficulty. The staff was extremely organized and compassinate. The trip turned into a very positive outting.. On the way home, I drove Dad past his boyhood home, where he use to work and other places that he would fondly recognize. He was not the least bit restless in the car as he usually tended to be. That was his last trip in his beloved car. (Dad passed a month ago.) In my opinion, the flu shot and the trip were very good medicines for my Dad. By the way, I am going to Costco today and get my flu shot. I am a retired RN and feel that it is safe and important. Thanks, Gerry
Guest guest
Hi Gerry, I am sooooo glad to hear this! I have " documented " every since I started to take my Uncle to the doctor well over 12 years ago and I can " see " where this LBD pattern has taken us. I will welcome Hospice with open arms! Thank you so much for your input! Peace to you....Stevie * * * * * * * * * * * Hi Stevie- I can't say enough good things about Hospice. We had them for aprx. 2 years. Yes, they do re-evaluate the patient every 6 months. At one point, they were considering letting Dad go from the program because he was stable. Fortunately, we had a very good nurse who documented everything. She would quote things that my Dad and the family said. For instance, one day Dad held out his arm and said to the nurse " Look how thin I am getting. " Also, I would write down any behavior problems and falls, which the nurse would include in her notes. The nurse proudly told us that her documentation saved my Dad from being dismissed from the program. You are right that you have to take care of yourself also. I look in the mirror and I can see the toll that 4 years of 24/7 has taken on me. I can also see what it has done to my Mother. However, part of the problem was that my Mom was reluctant to hire and pay for outside help. Since, I am a nurse a great deal of reponsibility fell on me. However, towards the end she did hire more help. I really wished that my Mother would have made it easier on me and herself. I think Mom thought my Dad was going to live forever and was afraid to spend the money. Common in older people. Thanks for listening, Gerry Wilmington, De.
