Melody,I do LOVE what she did in that video. We had looked into that kind of

settup for our house but even just putting it together after they make it for us

was a bit too much for us. And now since we made windowshelves for all of our

windows, my plant collections and the cats and dog claim all window space. We

ended up getting the aerogardens instead. But that is a marvelous idea. If you

like herbs, definitely plant some outside or even consider the 3 pod aerogarden.

I find that mixing the organic, home grown herbs in with my sprouts is

amazing.:) marion

Hi.

You are GOING TO LOVE THIS. I wish I could do it, but I don't have her skills

and my windows face the street and I don't think other people would go for it.

But someday!!!!!!

Melody, wait until Alan starts coming up with stuff like this himself. My

husband was the one who started the worm composting and rainwater collection

ideas for us.I don't know if we are going to do the rainwater collecting, but

the worms are still in the plans.I just like the way he is thinking. He now ASKS

for more sprouts.Once a person sees that we are not depriving ourselves, are

eating well, and having fun doing it, sprouting, growing things at home, and

preparing our own food seems attractive to a lot of people who otherwise would

not think of such a thing.:) marion

After my Aerogarden success, I got totally enthused w/ thoughts of self

sufficiency and fresh herbs and produce growing at home and dove head first into

hydroponics. I ordered an aeroponic/ bubbleponic unit online, and then got

inpatient and built one myself before the other arrived. Very easy to do and I

have them growing lettuce (transplanted from organic non hybrid heirloom seeds I

cultivated at first in the Aerogarden), kale, arugula, collard greens, spinach,

and a strawberry plant. I'll post pics of the setup on the Sproutpeople yahoo

group site. It's been a lot of fun, and it's nice to know I grew them all on my

own-at least the lettuce, and I know their organic non gmo, and what I've been

feeding them. If only I had a spare room/basement-I'd have a hydroponic farm up

and running in no time!

You don't need a lot of money to do hydroponics Melody-Lord knows I'm not rich.

Initial expense for a unit is easily under a hundred dollars, and if you use the

new CFL lights , electricity expenses are quite low. Thanks for the True Lemon

info, and to EW and others for the soda maker info. One of my weaknesses is

soda, and if this can help me create healthy soda's -as I attempt to totally

wean myself off of the bubbly stuff, it will be a great blessing. I've already

ordered some healthy flavorings, now I have to find a unit.

Hydroponics and other indoor gardening methods can SEEM expensive for the

initial outlay of things you need, but when you weigh that against the cost of

organic veggies, you come out ahead.  My daughter and I are both vegetarian,

and I grow ALL of our food, year round.  I garden outdoors during the season,

but grow most of the same stuff inside year round.  It is pretty cool to

harvest a summer squash from your living room in the middle of winter!

Aerogardens are a great way to start, which will no doubt inspire you to want to

explore other options!

There are MUCH easier ways to grow in small spaces.  I do gutter gardening,

which is a wonderful way to use space up the back of your house that would

otherwise be wasted.  I also have gutter gardens attached to my deck rails for

extra space.  You can buy small 1 foot by 1 foot vertical gardens at Lowes

hardware too.  Here is what my gutter gardens look like.

http://www.re-nest.com/re-nest/gardening/look-gutter-gardens-095827    I also

grow much of my stuff upside down from hanging planters, meaning that the plant

actually grows DOWN towards the ground, instead of up like traditional

gardening.  Upside down gardening is a great space saver, since you can grow

one plant upside down, and plant lettuce or herbs in the upper part, using one

pot for two crops.  Here are some of my upside down things.

, your photobucket looked more like a stacked container garden on your

patio or deck. Where did you get that? Issues here dealing with deer <sigh> -

not to mention my pesky chickens.

Thanks, Jane!  I HAD to get creative for several reasons.  First, I have a

TINY yard, and most of it goes up a hill.  I plant my melons, pumpkins and

other vining plants up the hill so the fruits spill downwards, and my berry

orchard and sunflowers grow on the hill.  Other than that, I have several

raised beds gardens.  When I became confined to a wheelchair, I thought my

gardening days were over, until I came up with the upside down gardening

technique which allows me easy access to the plants growing downwards.  My

simple hobby has turned into something that has taken on a life of its own.  I

have something edible growing on virtually every surface, indoors and out.  I

VERY rarely go to a grocery store, as we grow pretty much all of our own food.

I buy my grains in bulk-most everything else comes from the garden.  It has

reached the point where I view most everything as a potential planter, lol.

I just looked at that Window Hydroponic site and it's a great idea. Not so sure

I would want that big set up at my main living room window, but perhaps in a

spare room, or with lights in a basement. Most definitely space efficient. As

far as I'm concerned, with talk of potential food costs rising, and ever

increasing food safety questions, the in house options are not only looking more

appealing, but are almost a necessity. Just saw this article this morning which

further emphasizes our needs to be more self sufficient, as the elected men in

charge not only seem oblivious, but are actually urging this great nations

citizens to take no action of their own, and simply let the gov take care of

everything. Sorry.....think I'll pass on that one!

Great setup , and the gutter gardening looks fantastic. What is that solar

device you are using? Is it homemade? And what kind of cakes are those-I'm

starving here at the moment and they look delicious!

LOL, ****passes you a gluten free chocolate cake baked in my solar

oven******

The device is a solar oven-I have been cooking solar for many years now.  I

love that I can cook outside to keep the heat out of the kitchen!   I do NOT

sell the solar ovens, but I have a wholesale buying group where I can order them

as a group order and everyone saves money (I do NOT make anything off of this)

Feel free to drop me an email if you want info on ordering one.  We can get the

complete setup (pots and all, shipping included) for about 180.  It is AMAZING

to let the sunshine do your cooking!
