Yes, Karac is 15 and started the spitting just like you described; he started it about a year ago. We are just now getting it under control. We tried everything. The school even had a behavior therapist come out to try to help which made things worse. I tried to extinguish it by not paying too much attention to it. At gymnastics his LPT would just tell him to wipe it on his sleeve. I would say, "good swallowing". His special ed. teacher at school tells him to keep it in his mouth. Since school has started he has quit. There was no medical reason for it; I think he just enjoyed doing it, and he did it more when he was not engaged in an interesting activity; so that is another thing I did; I tried to keep him actively engaged. My son does do that but he does it to play with it because he is obsessional about water and liquid.

spitting

My son is now pooling his saliva and spitting, not at people, but in school he constantly goes to the sink to spit, and when outside. At home he will spit in places like a cupboard. Anyone ever deal with this? Did you come to find out that there was any medical/dental cause?Janie

We have a student who is now letting her saliva drop onto something; she'll then rub it in. Any ideas on how to stop this?

With Karac we try to keep him engaged in activities because he doesn't spit when he is busy. We also tell him to swallow or wipe it on his sleave. It has taken a year, but now he has just about quit. Pat K************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Sometimes chewing gum helps because they swallow the flavored saliva.debby miller wrote: We have a student who is now letting her saliva drop onto something; she'll then rub it in. Dear Pat,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Most parents of

NT children could not imagine addressing any of these

behaviors, let alone for a year. We address them, one

after another, all of their lives. It helps to hear

that someone else's child has struggled with this and

it passed. Think of how strong we are; amazing aren't

we?

My son does this constantly = licks his finger and wipes saliva over available flat surfaces any where

Re: spitting

Janie, Karac started doing that too. Most of the time he just puts it on his finger and wipes it on something. I'm just glad he has stopped just spitting it out every where. I think he just likes the looks of it. Pat K**************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides.(http://travel.aol.com/travel-guide/united-states?ncid=aoltrv00030000000016)

I have taken the precaution of using cleaning products in the home that have no chemicals in because he is always licking the surfaces in the house and then putting them in his mouth. At school it is a problem as he wipes the spit on the tables so they put a small table cover where he sits and on the table at his workstation. Other suggestion have been supplying something acceptable to do it on which we do to a certain degree by maybe taking a metal car out with us as I know he will do it on that.

Re: spitting

, do you have any ideas of what to do about it? I'm not sure it isn't less of a problem then one he might replace it with. LOL, Pat K**************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides.(http://travel.aol.com/travel-guide/united-states?ncid=aoltrv00030000000016)
