We are just now getting it under control. We tried everything. The school even had a behavior therapist come out to try to help which made things worse. I tried to extinguish it by not paying too much attention to it. At gymnastics his LPT would just tell him to wipe it on his sleeve. I would say, "good swallowing". His special ed. teacher at school tells him to keep it in his mouth. Since school has started he has quit. There was no medical reason for it; I think he just enjoyed doing it, and he did it more when he was not engaged in an interesting activity; so that is another thing I did; I tried to keep him actively engaged. At home he will spit in places like a cupboard. Anyone ever deal with this? Most parents of NT children could not imagine addressing any of these behaviors, let alone for a year. We address them, one after another, all of their lives. It helps to hear that someone else's child has struggled with this and it passed. Think of how strong we are; amazing aren't we? Most of the time he just puts it on his finger and wipes it on something. I'm just glad he has stopped just spitting it out every where. I think he just likes the looks of it. Guest guest Posted April 10, 2008 Report Share Posted April 10, 2008 I have taken the precaution of using cleaning products in the home that have no chemicals in because he is always licking the surfaces in the house and then putting them in his mouth. At school it is a problem as he wipes the spit on the tables so they put a small table cover where he sits and on the table at his workstation. Other suggestion have been supplying something acceptable to do it on which we do to a certain degree by maybe taking a metal car out with us as I know he will do it on that.
