My daughter is 12 and non verbal... it is so hard to know what is going on. One time Alyssa was grumpy and upset for over 2 weeks.... we knew something was wrong but we had no idea of what. The school kept asking me to take her to the doctor... I could not get the teacher to understand that I needed to have a symptom besides grumpy and upset... finally one morning she would not open her eye and it was all red... I was never so happy to see my child with pink eye but I finally had a symptom that we could work on. I took her to the doctor and they decided she had gouged her cornea. They fixed it and she was back to her old self.... It was a very long two weeks and it hurt me deeply that I could not fix what ever was going on. I share this to let you know that you are not alone and I wish we had a big magnifying glass so we

could look inside and know what they were thinking and feeling. We don't. It is so frustrating. Hang in there maybe something will become apparent to help you know what is going on. Watch for any kind of change or try to notice what is going on right before she burst into tears maybe you will be able to figure out what it triggering it. I hope you have a wonderful day.BlessingsCarmen Subject: Seizures/meds/?Depression?To: autism-georgia Date: Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 8:27 PM

Hi all,

My daughter is 10 yrs old; she is nonverbal and doesn't

communicate. She has seizures and autism.

She is currently taking Topomax and Lamictil for epileptic seizures.

She has been having sobbing spells and I haven't heard her laugh in a

long time.

Could the medicines be making her depressed??? I asked her

neurologist about this on her last visit (2 months ago) and he said

that Lamictil was a mood moderator and should actually improve her

mood.

Could this be a case where a medicine is having an opposite effect?

I know when they give her cough meds with codeine so she can rest ----

she's off the wall hyper!

I would appreciate any input; I can't stand to see her so sad and

sob like her heart is breaking!!!!

Thx all,

Cammy

My child doesn't have seizers, but I have a friend who's son does and I

have been reading on them a bit lately. I came across a article just

the other day about the anti seizer meds causing severe depression and

suicidal thoughts and attempts. It was talking about weather or not to

put the " black label warning " on anti seizer meds. If you think your

child is depressed you should defiantly bring this to your doc's

attention, and they could change the meds and see if it helps? I

answered this post because I felt that you should have this info . NOT

to scare you. I saw the article on MSN just a couple days ago. Here is

the link. Best of luck and God Bless.

Have her seizures changed during the same time period? When was the last time her levels were tested for the two meds she is taking? Have you looked into drug interaction between the two meds? I'm replying from my bberry and can't easily check it for you but the drug digest website would let you check interactions among all meds she is taking. These are the first things I would check if I were in your shoes. This is not a medical advice.
