This is an issue?  When I was a teenager, this was a common

occurrence.  Why on earth would the girl report him??  Every book on

puberty will tell you this happens often.

Has anyone that has a male teen ever had issues with them

having erections at school? If so what solutions do u have

to offer?

My sons school called and said he had n erection at school

and some girls noticed and reported him. So now I as a

single mom am faced with what to do. If he was a typical

kid,i could explain why its not proper but,he is an aspie

so I'm t a loss.

There is no real connection between an erection and needing to go to

the bathroom - except upon awakening.  Surely there must be more to

this?  Boys have been having to hide erections at school for

millennia, and I never heard of anyone being in trouble for having

one unless they were being an exhibitionist in some way.  Most

teachers would ignore the issue and tell everyone else to do the

same.

One practical suggestion: erections are harder to hide in lose

underwear like boxer shorts.  The old style underwear tended to be

more constraining so less revealing.

I am still amazed this is an issue.  Surely boys can't be punished

for something they have little - if any - control over.  This is not

something I'd be good at handling - I'd probably point out the it

was a non-issue, the principal was being a fool and should know

better.  That doesn't always help.  Perhaps you should ask the

principal to explain to you (you being female and all) just how your

son is to avoid having an erection and just what the school policy

is on what he should do if he has one.  If he can't answer those

questions, then I believe you are justified in calling him a fool or

whatever word of your choice that means the same and moving your son

to a school where common sense still exists.  Every boy is at some

time (probably more than once) going to have an erection at school,

and apart from trying to hide it there really is nothing else anyone

can do.

Nope he is male. Thats why I dont understand any of this.

Had my son threatened the girl maybe I could understand,

but he didnt. He said.he had to go to the restroom really

bad which I believe.

My only thought and this may be a bad mental picture, but how about wearing a boxer brief and tell him to put it along the zipper line to disguise it. Let him know it's normal and to just stay seated or try to hide it. To: Autism-aspergers <autism-aspergers > Sent: Saturday, December 17, 2011

yup, and untucked shirts can help camouflage too...reiterating that it's

" totally normal " but some kids just like to tease. Oh boy...things to look

forward to with my two sons, lol.

Tucked under the elastic band at the top of the boxers (or any

underwear) also works.  Except when not wearing a shirt :)  The

bottom line is that every boy has to find some way  of hiding

erections when they are unwanted/unneeded because all boys have the

problem of having erections at inconvenient times.  That a male

principal makes a fuss of something like this seems very odd to me.

I would be asking to be told exactly what the complaint was.  If it

is only that he had an erection and was not assumed to be doing more

than that, then it really is a non-issue.

I appreciate all the advice. He already wears the boxer briefs but ill have him try untucking his shirts or wearing bigger ones. And I am definitely talking to the principal again. As he did give me a warning about it hapening again-I don't want him in trouble.

There's an old proverb: forewarned is fore-armed.  It can be

embarrassing to bring up the issue of what to do with erections,

appropriate places/times for masturbation, etc, but it is less

embarrassing to talk about them before your son is in trouble for

getting it wrong rather than afterwards.  We were lucky that at the

time our son was behaving inappropriately at school that his teacher

(also principal) had had some experience with kids with AS and ADHD

(and had raised 2 boys) and understood that the boys needed extra

help with learning appropriate behaviour, so rather than making a

fuss, she just quietly had a word to us about what was happening.

Most boys pick things up easily from other kids or older brothers,

but our kids can be oblivious to social cues and often need explicit

teaching on most things.

I would find an advocate if the school will not back off. There is no way its ok for them to suspend him for a totally normal part of growing up. At the very least I would meet with the principal and have a conversation about " the birds and the bees".Jenn To: autism-aspergers Sent: Sunday, December 18, 2011

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow I have never heard of getting in trouble for something he has no control over. My children go to a private school but at home if it happens I see them pulling on there underwear to fix it and nothing is said being that I have 3 teen boys I have never had an issue when they were in public school I think this principle needs to be trained in aspie kids better just my opinion tho
