Guest guest
A child who is autistic was placed in a ball bag with the top closed tight! This happened at a kentucy public school. The teahers put him in the bag because he was " being bad " ! I am very angry at the public school system! My son goes to a special school now but, starts kindergaden next year. He is supposed to go to public school. I think I will find an alternate school. It seems almost every public school does not have the skills or common sense on how to handle our special children. They better fire those teachers and I hope the mother sues the school.
Guest guest
There is a huge lack of common sense in schools. That is a terrifying story and I cannot believe that has happened in 2011. I think an alternative to a public school is a great idea unless you know your school has a wonderful reputation. Good luck to you, finding the best educational environment for these kiddos is such a big job. A child who is autistic was placed in a ball bag with the top closed tight! Guest guest
Thanks everyone for you input. Thank you Jackie, for your personal story. I often worried about putting my son in public school. Bad things like "the ball bag incedent" seems to happen alot in schools. I am going to do everything in my power to find an alternate school for my son. This is on advice of Two pediatricians, and one psychiatrist...as well as personal experience. My son was very much traumatized by Public School, particularly Middle school. I'm only posting this in the hopes of possibly helping another family avoid what I went through. Jackie
Guest guest
I agree that public school was harder for my autistic son. The only concern I had about private was that most don't have an O/T, P/T speech or a behavior therapist. My son had a hard time but he is now 14 and has been in a public school the whole time. Guest guest
Why not home school or cyber school and then take him for his therapies? Guest guest
I don't think that's true of all schools. My daughter has had a fantastic experience with the school she's in currently. She's in a regular class, with regular classmates, and has not had issues with bullying at all. She's turning 10 next week. I do realize that her case is not normal by any means, but I think it really is a school-to-school issue. What happens at one, may not happen at another. > > Public school is the WORST place for kids with autism (unless they > are segregated from the general population which is brazen and full > of bullying) Aspergers Kids should also not be in Public. > This is on advice of Two pediatricians, and one psychiatrist...as > well as personal experience. > My son was very much traumatized by Public School, particularly > Middle school. Guest guest
I think part of that depends...My brother was in a Catholic school and my parents were told by the principal that he should be put in public school where he would get more help (although he never did). Even with smaller class sizes, the teachers didn't want to go that extra mile to give any one student a little extra help. My brother hadn't been dx w/Asperger's at the time, but I do think he was dx with ADD. He had no friends at that school, either. Bullying can be found anywhere for any reason, although I can agree that kids w/autism may be singled out more. It's just harder for them to understand. Sadly not everyone has an opportunity to keep their kids out of public school. Guest guest
I agree, we have had a really good public school experience. Our school has very strong anti-bullying policies. My son has been mainstreamed with full time aids when he was little. By 5th grade we just needed support for certain areas. The Autism team is really good and he has gotten great support. I also think that in his case, his social skills are better because of it. He is now in 9th grade and doing really well. I am always so sad to hear about other bad school experiences! Guest guest
I agree also -- we switched from a clueless private school to public schools where there is a great team in place -- ninth grade is a challenge but we're getting lots of help. Elementary couldn't have been better -- OT, ST, a district autism specialist, principal, classroom aides, all working together and available to us.
