Guest guest
Kate, I am using 8.5 " x 20 " trays. I get between 8 and 10 oz of juice per tray. Your trays are about 40% larger than mine therefore you should be getting between 10 to 14 oz of juice from one tray. I plant the wheat berries on 1/2 " to 3/4 " deep soil. Once the wheat grass is about 2 " high I water it from the bottom by lifting the mat. I water morning and evening from 1/4 to 1/2 a pint each time. I do not use any growing lights. When the weather is nice I place the trays outside during the day. Fred > I have been growing wheat grass on soil in trays and use Azomite. Guest guest
Kate, I also use 11 X 22 inch trays and grow with azomite. I use 1 ½ to 2 cups of wheat berries, soak them overnight and then leave them to sprout for another 12 hours in the jar. I then put them over about ¾ inch of coarse vermiculite that I add ¼ cup of azomite to it. I water them once a day, but I’m generous with the water. I’m curious how much you water them and also how long you are allowing the grasses to get, I allow mine to get 7-10 inches and then use it. I believe I get at least 8 oz or more per tray. It almost appears to me that you are not giving the grass enough water and therefore the grass that you are trying to get juice out of is basically dehydrated. Guest guest
Hello Fred; Thank you for the advice. I place the tray with the soil and wg in the sink and run the sprayer over it. Then turn wg,soil and tray upright and allow as much water as possible to drain. I keep the tray on another tray, elevated by wine bottle corks. The difference may be that I only water once per day - so that may be the answer. I will try watering morning and evening. Guest guest
Hello Bonnie; I do exactly as your paragraph 1 description. I place the tray with the wg in the sink and run the sprayer over it and then turn it upright to drain before placing on another tray for the daily rest cycle. The tallest my wg gets is about 5 " tall; and the grass seems very sparse.  The local Whole Foods sells bagged wg that looks more rich and it is much longer. Unfortunately their price is $14.99 per pound.   I will try watering twice per day and see if that makes a difference. Thanks Bonnie ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Thu, March 31, 2011 4:29:30 PM Subject: RE: Growing Wheat Grass  Kate, I also use 11 X 22 inch trays and grow with azomite. Guest guest
Kate, I never let it drain (as long as you don't drown the wheat grass). I water from the bottom because I believe that helps to prevent mould. Also, you might plant too few wheat berries. For my tray I use about 1 cup of dry wheat berries. You should use about 1 1/2 cups or close to it. I plant them on the soil when they just start sprouting. Fred > Hello Fred; > Thank you for the advice. Guest guest
Kate, I drink the wg as is, about twice 2 oz a day. If you have problems with the taste you can mix it with apple juice or carrot juice or any other juice you like. What you should remember tho is that the wg juice should be drunk within about 6 minutes of being pressed. After that the nutritional value diminishes very quickly. That's what Ann Wigmore taught. I hope this helps. Fred > Fred ; > Yes, I also use 1.5 ups of dry wheat berries. Will try the twice > daily watering > - see if that is the answer. Only other issue is the taste. Guest guest
Good Morning; Many thanks for all the growing wheat grass advice. I started a new routine this morning by watering from top of the tray with about 2 cups of water and I have removed the corks which raise the growing tray so now the growing tray sits on the water in the under tray. Thanks again Kate ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Thu, March 31, 2011 11:26:59 PM Subject: Re: Growing Wheat Grass n, do yourself a favor and don't chase wheatgrass with coffee, one of the big benefits of wheatgrass is that you are totally alkalinizing the body, if you chase it with coffee you are knocking out the potential alkalinizing effects bonnie On Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 9:18 PM, n Rollings, PhD < drmarionrollings@...> wrote: > > > Kate,I water my wheatgrass twice a day and grow it in about an inch or less > of soil.I am not fond of the taste of wheatgrass juice so we chase a shot of > it with either a sip of coffee or some apple juice. Guest guest
I love wheatgrass, am kinda on a wg kick right now but my only source is powder form. I think its ok but I'm seriously thinking of growing my own wheatgrass now for a pure and natural source. I'm looking at different advice on how to, what to use and so on. I've read Ann Wigmore's book and Sproutpeople's site info, and talked to friends who have done it to begin with. To those who have grown their own wg, did you buy trays and supplies from Sproutpeople, a different supplier, Home Depot, the gardening store, or made a system from what was on hand? Do you compost, use earth, vermiculite, baby blankets? I'm thinking of using vermiculite for the ease and minerals. I live in the Phoenix AZ area so I lean towards indoor growing. I don't compost as I have trouble keeping anything alive here that isn't native to the desert, and I don't really have any idea what I'd compost for at this point. all opinions welcomed. thanks G " It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them.
