Hi my 14 yr old Aspie was taking it 2 times a day as well and was falling asleep in school ultimately the doctor had to stop the pill in the morning and did 2 mg at night. Don't know if this is an option but explore it and see if it works for him. Oh as far as going to bed and waking that is the Melatonin my 15 yo is taking it and it does it to him try giving it to him a bit later (8:30-9) and see if that helps adjust his sleeping pattern

Wow, no advice b/c my son takes 1/2 tablet at dinner time and a .2 at bedtime and we still have to give him benadryl most nights to get to bed!!! To: autism-aspergers Sent: Sunday, January 29, 2012 8:18 AM Subject: Clonidine

Hi everyone,

my 8 year old son with Aspergers has started Clonidine for anxiety. He was taking .1 mg at night and also in the morning. Unfortunately, he falls asleep after an hour of taking it in the morning. His attitude has improved greatly after taking it, it's certainly working, and if school started at 10 am we'd be in good shape.

So we cut down to 1/2 pill in the morning, and same result. So then we stopped the Melatonin at night, and yesterday went perfectly. Now today, tried it again and now he's sleeping again. Arrrgh. Very frustrating. He has also been waking at 5am, and goes to sleep around 8:30-9pm.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!

He was taking Intuniv (which is Tenex, right?) and it didn't help at all.

Thanks April,

I think we'll have to do it just at night, because he missed school Thursday and Friday and we really cannot continue that. It's a shame because he really is calmer and not as anxiety ridden during the day (when he wakes up of course).

My son takes 1/4 of a tablet in the AM and 1/2 at night. We tried to do the

other 1/4 after school but it made him sleepy. We stopped melatonin at night b/c

the half tab seems to work for him and we thought it might have contributed to

his nightmares. I think we were still giving him the melatonin when we were just

giving the 1/4 tab. BTW, we stair stepped the amount of meds too so that he was

only on 1/4 tab, then 1/2 and now 3/4...mine only weighs 35 pounds though.

Isn't there a patch or extended release tablets? mine can't swallow pills yet or

try a patch b/c of his sensory concerns but maybe it's an option for you? Not

sure how much medication gets released at a time but ur doc should have an idea.

The daytime sleepiness was only supposed to last for a few weeks too...

Thanks for your response. The thing is, after he takes it in the morning, either 6 or 7 am, he's asleep for about 2 hours after. I'm going to ask the nurse practitioner about maybe 1/4 tab in the morning, that's a good idea. I wish we were doing this in the summer or something when this pesky school wouldn't interfere. ;)

It is actually given to make some children sleep better so it might need to be adjusted but there is a patch and there is intuniv a long acting version of tenex a similar drug - when my son was on it it took his body a while to adjust to the way it made him feel but it did get betterSent from my iPhone

I've never heard of it being given in the morning. Of course, I'm not all knowing. I do know that my daughter was prescribed it for sleep. She takes that and melatonin every night. It works wonders. She has been on it for about 7 years now. I know that she wouldn't be able to take it in the morning and still function at school.

Tenex and Intuniv are usually preferred to be given during the daytime, but my son does get a sm. dose of Clonidine during the afternoon, then again an hr. before bed (usually w/ his dinner). To: autism-aspergers Sent: Tuesday, January 31, 2012 10:05 AM Subject: Re: Clonidine

The medication's original intent was to help lower blood pressure and most

people take this medication evenly spaced throughout the day. Drowsiness is a

known side effect that actually diminishes over time, especially when the meds

are increased weekly in smaller, stair-stepped doses.

Some kids can take stimulants during the day and then they need help falling

asleep so their doc might prescribe this to help with that. This combination

scares me - A few deaths have occurred in kiddos that also had other

underlying/unidentified medical factors. So not just the drug combo itself but

still scary.

My child has sensory issues (gag reflex still) and can't swallow pills. We tried

stimulants (opened capsules and taken with food) and they dramatically stunted

his growth after just one year. We will not be using them anymore. My son also

has tactile issues so I can't put a patch on him without it causing major

discomfort/stress. Clonidine seemed like a good option and we have seen

improvements with the severity of his symptoms.

Clonidine for Autism

Using clonidine for autism spectrum disorders may be helpful in treating some of

the symptoms associated with the spectrum. The off-label uses of the drug

indicate that it may be effective in treating stress and anxiety, which can be

problematic in cases of autism. Other uses include:

Stereotyped repetitive movements

Ritualistic behaviors

Severe sensory issues

Inattention

Impulsive and aggressive behaviors

waking at 5am, and goes to sleep around 8:30-9pm.

Thank you all so very much for your responses. He'll just be taking it at night, and we'll see how it goes!

Thanks again!
