Guest guest
I know that there has been a lot of recent discussions on the virtues of various EMRs. What I don't remember is if anyone pays for record storage. I use practice management company (MDSynergy) that is now offering EMR. It seemed reasonable at first. $250 to add EMR then $100/mo for the EMR use. But they also charge $15/mo per 1G of storage (approx. 100,000 pages/G). My quick calculations suggest that I will need many gigs if I scan in old records and everything new that comes in. I probably should stay away from this EMR but I am afraid of the amount of work it will take to move from the current practice management on-line system and start with another to integrate with an EMR. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated and, as always, thank you for all the help. Alla Kirsch Solo FP in Cleveland P.S. Thanks for the help with CLIA. The check has been sent. Guest guest
Alla, Our EMR is a server-based system that resides in our office. It backs up every night to tape drive. We pay about $500/year for IT support for our hardware (help with upgrades, etc), and $1800/year for upgrades and support for our EMR (not required, but we like to have the most current software). Dr. Roy (who recently left our office and purchased another practice and for whom I am working part time) is in the process of converting from e-CW to e-MDs. It is a pain to convert, but you should also look at if the EMR is going to be able to be a “qualified” system under the new Medicare rules so that you can qualify for ARRA money in 2011. The guidelines should be out by the end of this year, so I’d hold off and make a decision based on that rather than what’s going to be the “easy” way. Guest guest
For those of you who have switched EMRs, how do you store the old records? Do you end up needing to keep/run a separate computer as a storage site or was integration with new EMR possible? (not thinking of switching any time soon, but a colleague here interested in starting her own IMP had this question.) Thanks Ramona Ramona G. Guest guest
This totally depends on the two EMRs, how the data is structured, and how many resources you want to devote to integrating the data. Unless you have lots of money for custom programming, or unless you really like database programming, you will probably want to limit the data you transfer to things that can be easily extracted from the old system through canned reports, and easily imported into the new system. A very simple solution is to make a disk image of the old system, back it up several places, and then run it within a Virtual PC window on the machine you use to access your new system. That way, the old data is always there, and you can cut and paste it into the new system whenever you wish. After the first year, you will only very rarely be looking at the data in the old system. dts From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of RGMS Sent: Thursday, August 06, 2009 1:06 PM To: Subject: RE: Re: EMR fee for storage For those of you who have switched EMRs, how do you store the old records?
