My son was diagnosed in Macon by Dr. Young. She is a

Developmental Pediatrician. I don't have her number but she is in the

phone book. If not her, then try UGA in Athens or the Markus

Institute in Atlanta.

Mike and others: I have heard through the grapevine that Dr. Young, whom my son sees, is not taking new patients, but if you want to call to confirm that , her phone number is 633-8009 (I have it memorized lol) . . . . I do not have any other ideas for you at this time, but I do know that Awakenings has gotten excellent reviews and is new in Macon. I have heard through a different grapevine (how do I know all these grapevines!!!) that they have a 2 month waiting list. Good luck and if you wish to discuss this off list, write me at my email address as I live in Macon, like, I assume Mike does. . . . blessings, >> From: taylorandandrew <cindypikecharter (DOT) net>> Subject: Two Great

Hi,

I live in Warner Robins/Macon. Try Dr. Duke or Dr. , they are DAN physicians. We used Markus for several years and got no results. Dr. Duke & also have a great ABA therapist. Their clinic is called awakenings medical center 471-0710. You can look them up on the web at www.awakeningsmedicalcenter.com. Dr. Duke's son is diagnosed, so she definitely understands. Good luck.

Hi,

My son has been diagnosed with a mild form of Autism, PDD. My question is what happen next. He's in day-care and goes to speech therapy once a week. I really haven't seen a big differeence in his language development. We sign up for babies can't wait, but not much help there.

Confused in Warner Robins

Thanks

I too have my son in speech therapy through Babies Can't Wait, and we haven't seen any improvement in language through their efforts (he has been with them for 6 months). I think that they just do not know the best way to teach a child with Autism, because they do not learn in the same way as other children. I have just started my son with ABA therapy, and their approach is much different and completely tailored to the child's needs. While we have only had one session, I can see how the ABA approach will be better suited for my son and will help teach him in the way he needs to be taught. I am excited to see what will happen over time....I have heard wonderful things about ABA, so I am hoping it will work for my son, too!

Good Luck :-)

I did the Babies Can't Wait also, and it didn't help my child either.

But it wasn't because they didn't know how to teach her, it was

mainly because of lack of trying. My daughter's speech therapist at

the time made every excuse not to come. Our appointment was at 10:00

am, it was supposed to be for at least an hour. She would come at

10:30 always came late, and always tried to find an excuse to leave

(i.e. her alarm went off at home, etc.) I complained but even that

was slow. I would only recommend Babies Can't Wait only as a last

resort. Does anyone out there have positive stories about them?

for us, BCW didnt provide quality therapy but we looked at the visits

as more respite for me or dh when they did show up. we have always

done a private home program and private therapies in addition to

school and BCW.

How old is your child. Babies Can't Wait works with them till they are 3 years old then transferred to the school system for evaluation and special needs preschool class and/or special services to be provided. We are seeing a DAN physician (Defeat Autism Now) in Melbourne, FL for our 4 year old son with Dr. Dan Rossignol. What a wonderful experience even though we drove 10 hours to get there to see him. Follow up will be by phone until the 6 month follow up in person again. Melbourne is a beautiful beach area so it is nice to travel there with the family. We are on suppliments, B12 shots, special GF/CF diet ! and going for an EEG by Pediatric Neurologist, Dr. Philbrook this month due to possible seizure disorder. All the suppliments and especially the diet are making a big, big difference for our son.

He is in the Special Needs Preschool Classroom in our county here in GA where he receives several times a week OT and Speech therapy. He doesn't speak as of yet, just turning 4 years old this month. We take steps daily towards his recovery and believe strongly in doing all we can for him during these early years. The start at 2 years old was slow but that was the system. God Bless and feel free to write me at dlscrc@....

Take care,

I'll have to chime up - at this time - until next Friday we are unsure if my son has Autism but he has been taken into the Babies Can't Wait program for being " deveopmentally delayed " - so far, four visits - I would have to praise them, our speech therapist. He might not be expressing the language more - but I belive, and so does my husband that his receptive language has gotten better.

we had our 4 yo twin girls evaluated at Emory Autism Center this summer and i would not recommend it. the wait was 6 months. We had the eval in July and still don't have a report of the evaluation results. they brought us in for a feedback session to tell us what they found but only gave us a generic 2 page form listing which characterisitics they noted. we've received a bill but no report.

I like this thread of thought - you figured out an important rule that

most parents don't get for at least the first year - not all therapies

will work with your child. If it ain't working, fire them and try

someone else.

In my case, we are on our 4th speech therapist, who was the first one

who has made marked progress in 3 years of speech therapy. It took us

the first three to identify and resolve avoidance behaviors so that he

would want to participate in sessions. My 3rd therapist wanted to quit

because she couldn't get past the avoidance, so I doubled up my SLP and

special instruction at the same time for five weeks so that my

son " couldn't get out of it " .

Hi, I am new to the group and have an 8 yr old son diagnosed with Asperger's. We went to the Marcus Institute in July of last year and do not recommend it either. Doctor still wouldn't give us a definitive diagnosis even though he scored a 92 on AS scale. We finally got firm diagnosis using her report along with his behaviors from his pediatrician and pyschologist(sp?). The doctor at Marcus just wanted us to keep bringing him back every month even though we live in Northeast GA and it takes us almost 2 hrs to get there. The lady had to be nuts to think I was making that trip with him every month if I didnt have to. Found a local child pyschologist and she is wonderful and was able to definitely confirm the AS diagnosis.Tabitha and the unique Noah ---
