we tried a LOT of natural remedies before medications too- and nothing was strong enough to help my son sleep.  he's been on something to help him sleep since he was 4 too.  we are currently on clonidine and have been for years.  he doesn't take a whole lot of it at all, and it truly works for him.  i don't know what we'd do without it.  he literally does.not.sleep without aid.  every family has to make their own decisions based on what they're comfortable with, but for us, this med has been a great addition to our family's health and happiness.  good luck!

My son who is on the spectrum was diagnosed when he was 2 1/2 yrs old. However, he will be 4 in December. Recently he has been going through bouts where he cant fall asleep or stay sleep. It disrupts us as his parents and him because he is in pre-school and needs to have an adequate amount of sleep to function properly. I was told by his neurologist to start giving him Melatonin, which I did. I do not think its working. We have been trying it since May. His doctor suggested Clonidine. I didnt want to just give him anything being that he is still young.

 

What are your thoughts?

he takes .1 now.  he has taken it in the afternoons to help with hyperactivity as well- and that was a huge help, but at this point (he's 10) he's only taking it at bedtime.  i never used benadryl- mostly b/c i felt like that was a temporary fix, and it made me uncomfortable.  also, we keep him away from food dyes- he's super sensitive to them and gets very hyper and aggressive when he consumes them- so i didn't want to deal with that either.

Try adjusting the melatonin dose. As with everything it is not one size fits all.

my nephew who lives with me has been on it for almost a year now, if he does not take it he will stay up all night. His sleeping problem got so bad he was up for 42 hours stright. The doctor put him on it and wow what a change.

Hi Charity

I actually picked up the script yesterday and started it last night. He slept like a baby and even when my newborn was crying and woke him up, he stayed up for like 15mins and went back to sleep, which has never happened. Hopefully this is it and I wont need any more meds.

I tried it last night and he slept like a baby....I didn't have to beg him to lay down or yell at him, when I said ok lights out grab your pillow. He grabbed his pillow and laid down, fast asleep.

I have a daughter, she is now 15 years old. from birth to 5 years old, she would not sleep through the night. she was diagnosed at 5 years old with autism, anziety disorder, mentally retarded, asthma and sleep apnea. among other things. clonidine is a life saver. she sleeps through the night. and has been doing this for 10 years.
