Dear ,

Yes, separation anxiety (which is often worse at night) can be part

of OCD. It is technically one of the other anxiety disorders, but a sudden

onset of severe separation anxiety often comes with a sudden onset of OCD in

PANDAS and similar syndromes. Our daughter, who is 10, still goes through

periods of not being able to sleep in her room. We won't stay in there with

her, or allow her in our bed (because that would be backsliding after much

progress on this over the years) but we often find her on our bedroom floor

in the morning. (Yes, we do step on her pretty often.) It always starts when

her OCD flares up and is related to " bad thoughts " , though I'm not sure

which.

And yes, two children in one family can get OCD, but it's not " from

their mother " . It's a complicated combination of genetic predisposition and

all kinds of other factors. Don't for one second blame yourself for any OCD

in your kids!!!

Dear ,

My son is 9 years old and I've had to sleep with him every night of

his life. Tried for years to sneak out, finally have given up so we could all

get a good nights sleep. I've heard with OCD you can have separation anxiety

early on which my son has. I think as they start getting modest, things will

change, so I've heard!

I don't know if this is separation anxiety. That is a good question.

Regarding the genetic connection and OCD. My grand-father was

clearly OCD. They didn't have a name for it back then. He covered

his furniture with cloths, car seats with plastic, and wore gloves

everywhere. My mother described then as his driving gloves, but he

never took them off, especially during meals.

Both of my children have OCD now. I thought it was learned, however,

their symptoms are completely different. My son is a washer,

cleaner, scared of sexual thoughts, does repetative questioning of us

until we break, hums, sings, grunts, hurts his sister constantly.

Our daughter checks her underwear constantly, wooried it is wet, she

has incontinence, hoards/collects, pulls my hair all night when she

sleeps, peels her fingers and toes. Last week she peeled off all the

skin on the bottom of her foot.

Both children have had a history of seizures.

Dear :

For several months my non-OCD child, 9 y/o, also needed me to lay with him

before he could fall asleep. I called my dr. worried that he too may have OCD

because he was scared to go to sleep w/o me. She told me to make sure that he

wasn't watching disturbing things on tv (eg " Real TV " , that emergency room show,

missing children shows, violence, etc.) and was not having any sugar after 6:30

p.m. He is really into watching surgeries, detective shows on tv -- which now

he doesn't. Well, we did all of that and it did seem to help -- must to my

dismay he does go to sleep with the tv on, but I'm not lying with him anymore.

I hope this helps or gives you some things to think about -- hopefully it isn't

the OCD that's not letting her go to sleep w/o you.
