Squash drinks and hyperactivity?

I have a little boy

who is 2 years 6 months and has autism and ADHD. I wanted to

cut aspartame out of his diet and asked the dietician about an

alternative squash that doesn't contain aspartame. She recommended I

try a shop's own hi-juice. So I tried Tesco's strawberry and apple

hi-juice. He went extremely hyper over the weekend after having a few

cups of the hi-juice squash despite it being very diluted. After we

switched back to the orange squash that contains aspartame, he calmed

down a lot. Can any of you recommend a make of squash that is less

likely than the Tesco hi-juice to cause my son to become hyperactive,

yet doesn't contain aspartame.

Thanks,

Hi ,

I'm not familiar with squash drinks. Can you tell us what the

ingredients are in the one that made your ds so hyper?

I gave my ASD ds drinks with aspartame when he was that young too,

which is when I knew nothing about ASD or nutrition, really. I so

regret that now.

I NEVER thought I could get him off sweet drinks, but I was finally

able to switch him over to 100% juice and then slowly diluted it

with water. It was probably a six month process, but we finally got

him drinking just water, and he's been doing that for at least 5

years now. He would never think to drink anything else at this

point :-).

I know it sounds like a daunting task, but it really is possible.

This was a kid who wouldn't touch water and only drank diet sprite

for a long time (yikes!).

HTH and good luck,

Sally

My kids have never been able to have sugar substitutes bc they were both diagnosed with severe life threatening GERD at 5 and 7 days old respectively. They also don't get caffeine and I give them tea for the antioxidant properties but make it caffeine free.

I work with Green tea for my research so I give it to my kids bc it is not only an antioxidant but it aids in keeping the glutathione levels at normal.

Hi Sally

Thanks for your reply. I will try juices and gradually diluting them.

That's a really good idea.

Hi Pat. squash is something we have in England. It's a bottle of

diluted orange drink or other flavours and you have to add one part

squash to 5 parts water to make it up as a drink. used to

drink water but now he refuses it.

Thanks, , that is interesting. I think I would try to wean him off of the Squash drink, particularly since it causes him to have hyperactivty. I think in time he would learn to drink water again, but I know they don't change easily.
