Hi, my name is Heidi, I'm 37, single and I live in Northern CA. I'm

scheduled for surgery on Dec. 18th! I'm very excited and nervous all

at once. This wasn't a hasty decision on my part, I've been

researching surgery and alternatives since 2001. I lost 90 pounds and

over the last year and a half I've gained it all back to be 295 now.

I feel totally betrayed by my body, lol...I've exercised and sweated

my heart out to no avail. My thyroid is okay but I'm insulin

resistent. I eat healthy, a lot of salads and lean meats, low carbs,

etc. I'm just a very efficient baby machine I guess. I gained my

weight with my kids. Lost it all on the second one (that original 90

pounds), but as soon as I started to slow down breastfeeding I

started gaining 2 lbs. per week..like clockwork. It was weird.

So anyhoo, I met with Dr. K last April? in Ukiah and will be arriving

in Delano Sun., Dec. 16th.

I need to know which protein shakes I should get now...I'm reading my

workbook, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best shakes

for absorption and less bloating, etc..what's the best out there? And

I'm going to take my son's chewable vitamins, but I know that there

are companies who make vitamin supplements and shakes specifically

for DS patients.

I think that's it for now, sorry this is so long..I'll post photos

somewhat soon...lol.

Heidi,

Don't waste your money at this time with buying alot of stuff. Most DSrs have a

change in their taste after surgery, so you may not be able to use what you buy.

I think Flinstone's children's vitamins are what's mentioned most. They

certainly serve me well. I take two a day. I have three bottles of fancy DSrs

vitamins put away. Dr. K didn't seem to want me to take those yet. So, I got

Flinstone's.

You can get protein samples from various web sites: vitalady.com revival

soy.com and unjury.com I think Dr. K mentions one site in his book.

I'm having the best luck with Unjury unflavored protein powder. You can put it

in foods, and it really doesn't effect the taste. I have quite a few Revival Soy

shakes, and they are okay. I liked them better before the surgery, and I'd only

reorder the coffee flavored ones.

I'm taking a scoop of unflavored Unjury, with 8 oz soy milk (vanilla), and one

packet of Weight Watchers vanilla smoothie mix. This gives you 36 gr of protein

and tastes really good. I don't remember the carbs, but I can keep it down

pretty easily. So, I am going with that.

Hope this helps.

Have faith. You must think you are not forgotten, that something is happening

for you. That we hold you in the palm of our hand, will not falter, nor will we

ever let you go.

Welcome, Heidi! And congrats on your surgery date! Dr. K is

wonderful and the staff is excellent. You are in good hands. I wish

you the best on your upcoming surgery. (I'm still on a soft foods

diet, and bloat on EVERYTHING, so I'll be interested to see any

answers you get.)

Much love,

Jolene

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely keep it in mind. I'll look for

the unjury powder. I just bought a whole case of Kirkland (Costco

brand) shakes. They have 44g of carbs, 10g of protein, and like 1g of

fat. I could add the powder to them for sure. They are chocolate

though. Have you tried lactose free milk? I LOVE milk; it'll be hard

giving it up.

I'll be posting and asking lots of questions I'm sure. Thanks so much

for the advice.

Ah, you might be sorry for buying that case! Our tastes really do

change after surgery. You might not be able to stomach those shakes.

Also, they are quite high in carbohydrates. I wouldn't use more than

one each day.

Carbs & protein in shakes and bars... You really want to look for a high

ratio of Protein to Carbs, like 20 Protein to less than 20 Carbs. Good

luck!

Bobbe,

It takes a bit of hunting, but SlimFast makes a Low Carb Diet protein shake

(blue can.) We found it at Sams Club, but someone said it was also

available at Costco and WalMart. Make sure you get the Low Card Diet in

the blue can. It has 20 grams of protein and only six grams of carbs per

11oz can. Slimfast also makes two other versions, both of which are high

in carbs and sugar, their regular formula and the Optima. Stay clear of

those.
